YEAR-ROUND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

AT BUSINESS RECORDER (BR) RESEARCH

Pakistan’s biggest financial newspaper, the daily Business Recorder (BR), seeks to induct up to
two interns for its research department on ongoing basis for each of its offices in Karachi and
Islamabad.

Key highlights
- The internship period is 8 to 12 weeks.
- We have a year-long internship programme, which means we have openings for fresh
interns every two months. However, interested candidates can apply for an extended
period of internship subject to their performance.
- On case to case basis, we also offer remote working and flexible timings, subject to an
all-day team interaction at least twice a week.
- This is not an average internship programme; only serious candidates who are willing to
learn and work under strict deadlines should apply.
- There are two streams:
o Research Assistance Internships
o Project-Based Internship
- Candidates may be offered a job depending upon their performance, potential and job
openings.

- Both streams of interns are paid an honorarium of Rs5000/month plus a reference letter
with a list of their publications, provided they are able to produce publishable quality
research.

The ideal candidate should:

- Be pursuing an undergrad degree in the fields of economics, finance and business,


broadly conceived
- Posses analytical skills and an understanding of current trends in business and economy
- Have strong interpersonal and communications skills, and wide interests to be able to
meet the challenge of working in Pakistan’s happening news environment.
- Strong command over MS Office Packages
- Fluency in spoken and written English is a MUST

Job Description: Research Assistance Internships

While the intern is expected to contribute in many ways to different research products (see pages
3 & 4 for BR Research profile and its products), typical responsibilities include the following:

- Interviews
o Conduct research to prepare for interviews of corporate and public sector
executives and prepare summaries thereof
o Prepare interview questions
o Accompany research analysts for interviews
o Transcribe interviews

- Research Assistance
o Conducting historical analysis, fact checks, and preparing summaries
o Collecting and analyzing financial and economic data
o Doing literature review

- Prepare presentations
- Article contribution: The candidate may also be requested to write short reports on a wide
variety of corporations and different sectors of the economy
- Attend conferences/seminars on behalf of BR Research, and write short commentaries
thereupon, if and when need be

Job Description: Project-Based Internships

This stream is preferably open to MBA or MSC level candidates. However, those BBA/BSC level
students who are in their last year of education can also apply. All candidates for this stream must
have some prior professional experience and have the capability to work on projects
independently with little operational supervision.

In this stream, interns will have to conduct research and submit a project report on their
chosen/assigned topic within internship period of 8-12 weeks. The following list of projects are
currently open, however, candidates are encouraged to come up with their own topics as well:

- Design and implement a BR Research Reader Survey, including recommendations.

- Sector-wise of inflow of foreign portfolio investments at the PSX, in comparison to


investments by local players, and its impact on the market

- Progress of power sector reforms

- Scoping studies:
o Maritime sector: shipping and cargo
o Warehousing and logistics

subject of their choice, related to Pakistan’s business or economy.

BR RESEARCH PROFILE

Formed in July 2009, BR Research is the research wing of Pakistan’s premier financial
newspaper, the daily Business Recorder. In keeping with BR’s tradition of pioneering economic
journalism in the country, BR Research is Pakistan’s first research-oriented mainstream media
publication.

Its main product is the newspaper’s agenda-setting column that focuses on wide ranging topics –
from business and markets, corporate and financial affairs to matters related to politics, economy,
public policy and development. While the column’s centre of attention is Pakistan’s economy with
a focus on economic reforms, it also covers key issues relating to regional and global economy.

Unlike opinions and features on economic issues published elsewhere, BR Research has an
emphasis on evidence-based commentary with an aim to provide actionable intelligence where
need be.

The department comprises of financial and economic analysts, most of whom have had prior
experience in financial and media industries, after being schooled in leading local and foreign
universities. Although the department is still quite young, a few of BR Research alumni have
moved on to lucrative careers in reputed global and local organisations.

Team BR Research maintains close interaction with business leaders, trade and industry
associations, policymakers, think tanks, regulatory authorities and government officials. This
helps readers identify changes and challenges to macroeconomy, business and industries as well
as to social-economic development.

Our products

Our main publication is called Analysis & Comments by BR Research. These columns feature
Monday to Friday on page-2 (inside front) of the newspaper.

Aside from these columns, we have three other products:

a. periodic sector-specific publications that provide in-depth perspectives of the emerging


challenges and opportunities;
b. bi-weekly interviews of public, private, and third sector leaders;
c. thrice-weekly performance review of a selected firm.
