Assignment

 It’s January 2019 and West ham will be hosting their bitter rivals, Milwall FC, in the third round of
the FA Cup.

You have been asked to design a marketing flyer/poster to advertise the match (with purpose of selling
tickets)

- Your flyer/poster must celebrate the local rivalry between the clubs
- But – you must do everything you can to avoid promoting or celebrating violence
- Be creative! Could this be the start of rebranding the club and its fans?

Solution

“We welcome Millwall to the new West Ham”

FRONT PAGE

It’s January 2019 and West Ham just draw their rivals Millwall for the first time in many years. There
is always a lot of violence at these matches, and West Ham wants that to stop. Therefor they should
present a flyer, where it shows a friendly rivalry between the teams. The way to do that, could be as
in the example above, where you see a Millwall and a West Ham fan shaking hands. Furthermore,
could the clubs take pictures of all the players together that shows the rivalry, but in a friendly way.
The move to London Stadium should be a start of a new and more friendly rivalry between West
Ham and Millwall. Although it would be hard to get the hooligans to stop all the violence, this could
hopefully show most of the fans, that you can hate each other and teas each other without violent.
All over England we see rivalries, but no one is as violent as these. There is also a local rivalry in

Liverpool against Liverpool and Everton. This rivalry is far as violent as West Ham vs Millwall and
rivalries like that, is what they should aim for.

A lot of people see the players as their idols, and if they see them together and friendly to each
other, they hopefully could understand that violent isn’t necessary. Furthermore, they can appeal to
the youth, so they won’t be raised with this hate and violent. It is still important for the clubs to have
these rivals. It gives a fantastic atmosphere and it’s also a good way for the club to make money.
Therefore, it’s also important to remember the history between the two clubs and celebrate the
rivalry.

In the top you’ll see an example of the frontpage of the flyer. On the back there will be focus on the
history of this rivalry. This rivalry is one of the longest and most bitter rivalry in English football. But
the focus shouldn’t be at the violence in these matches, but more about the great atmosphere and
maybe the results. At the back of the flyer, the focus and theme will still be the friendly rivalry and
you therefor see a picture of West Ham and Millwall fans standing together in a march through
London against extremism. As earlier written, there will be focus on the atmosphere which you can
see in the example In the bottom. A possibility is also to put some of the old results on the page to
show how many matches and close matches there has been between the two clubs.
