FEDERALISM IN AN ALREADY UNITED NATION?

In this status quo, federalism has become the main point of the administration.
They believe that it is one way of repelling the never- ending problems of the country.
Some of the facts about federalism are: 1. Locals decide for themselves; 2. More power
over funds; 3. Promote specialization among others.1 While it is true that it would provide
even more accountability on checks and balances of the proposed 18 regions, I stand
against the federalism. In a span of more than 30 years, we have been living with the
guide of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. It has become the foundation of our lives.
Federalism would only shake the political system of our country provided that it will
change the whole system. In the words of Francisco Tatad, a columnist in Manila Times
newspaper, which I quoted, “We need to see that our main problem has nothing to do
with the unitary character of our Republic, but simply how to make the presidential system
work better.”2
