Efficiency Optoelectronic Devices for Energy Efficient Solid State Lighting

A seminar was conducted at University of Science and Technology of Southern

Philippines intended for Engineering Students last December 17, 2018 held at
Performing Arts Theatre, Engineering Building 42, 6th floor. The seminar entitled
Lecture Series on Efficiency Optoelectronic Devices for Energy Efficient Solid State
Lighting, This said event was headed by the College of Engineering and Architecture
(CEA), with the support of Electronics and Communication Engineering Department,
Electrical Engineering Department and Computer Engineering Department. The
lecture series objective is to give, share and impart knowledge towards the said
different Engineering students, faculties, and other guests from the industry. Also, this
event will be an avenue to concur a collaboration between the university and the
industry. Started around 2:00 pm. After the warm welcome of Dr. Consorcio Namoco
introduced our guest speaker. He is Ryan Ganipan Banal Dr. of Engineering, a DOST
Balik Scientist from Japan and an expert on Optoelectronics and Power Electronic
Devices. He introduced and discussed on his Research Overview: Growth and
Fabrication of Light-Emitting Diodes based on III-Nitride Semi-Conductor Materials.
Before he goes directly to the topic, the speaker defines and enumerates some good
points about LEDs. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are small colored lights available in
any electronics store which are ubiquitous in modern society. Numeric displays on
clock radios, digital watches, and calculators are composed of bars of LEDs. LEDs
also find applications in telecommunications for short range optical signal transmission
such as TV remote controls. Blue and green nitride LEDs exhibit brightness levels and
longevity well in excess of that required for outdoor applications. The light emitting
diodes are essential for full color displays and for new applications such as in signal
and illumination applications. He said that the LED is extremely energy efficient and
consume up to 90% less power and it has long lasting technology making it more
rugged and durable than traditional incandescent light bulbs. It has no warm up period
it will just light up instantly. It also does not contain any hazardous substances like
mercury.
