In 2008, the Oakland City Council reduced funding to
the city’s Tree Division and suspended routine tree- plantings, so the Sierra Club’s SF Bay Chapter began to plant trees where homeowners would take care of them. Beginning in early 2010, the Sierra Club Tree Team planted trees using only small groups of volunteers, hand-tools, and private vehicles. As of January 2018, we (and our sister organization Trees for Oakland) have planted over 1,750 trees, many of them in communities rated as "environmentally disadvantaged" by CalEnviroScreen2.0.
