Welcome Message

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee, and the Dioxin Symposia and
PCB Workshop International Advisory Boards, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you
to Kraków for the 38th International Symposium on Halogenated Persistent Organic
Pollutants (POPs) & 10th International PCB Workshop : DIOXIN 2018.

The year 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the regaining of independence by Poland.

The Dioxin Symposium and International PCB Workshop are recognized as the leading
international POPs meetings for scientists and regulators. This year, apart from the
International PCB Workshop, the Dioxin Symposium will also host the Pre-Dioxin Students
Session “All POPs & Pseudo-POPs”, five major Special Sessions (Biodetection Methods for
POPs and Related Food and Environmental Contaminants; Environmental Persistence,
Analytical Methods and Risk of Human and Veterinary Pharmaceuticals that can act as
pseudo-POPs; European Food Safety Authority Special Session: EFSA Risk Assessments of
Persistent Organic Pollutants in Food and Feed; Legacy and Emerging Fluorinated Organic
Compounds Update and Progress in Industrial Technology and Sustainable Chemistry to
Phase out and Control POPs) and traditional sessions throughout the meeting.

Dioxin 2018 highly promotes the involvement of industry in fighting POP pollution and
interaction of industry representatives with potential and existing customers and clients in all
areas of investigation: analytical, regulatory, exposure assessment, and toxicological aspects
relating to Persistent Organic Pollutants. Therefore, the message of the DIOXIN 2018 is: no
boundaries in POPs pollution, research and control.

Symposium will be held in the heart of downtown Kraków. The site for the Students – Pre-
Dioxin Session: “All POPs & Pseudo-POPs” will be held in the Auditorium Maximum
building of the Jagiellonian University located near the Old Downtown Kraków area, the core
Symposium will be held at the International Congresses Entrainment (ICE) Kraków
Congress Centre and at the Q Hotel Plus Kraków. There are numerous restaurants, museums,
historical jewels, the old Jewish suburb Kazimierz, theatres, and other attractions within
walking distance. Generally, Kraków and the region are highly attractive for tourists and a
spacious Kraków historical downtown is crowded in the summer time. We hope that you
participate in Dioxin 2018 and look forward to welcoming you to Kraków.

All important details and dates are presented on the conference website –
www.dioxin2018.org that will be updated regularly.

WELCOME

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee, and the Dioxin Symposia and
PCB Workshop International Advisory Boards, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you
to Kraków for the 38th International Symposium on Halogenated Persistent Organic
Pollutants (POPs) & 10th International PCB Workshop – DIOXIN 2018.

The year 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the regaining of independence by Poland. The
country rebirth occurred in 1918 after 123 years of occupation and enslavement of the nation
by three big invaders.

The Dioxin Symposium and International PCB Workshop are recognized as the leading
international POPs meetings for scientists and regulators. This year, apart from the
International PCB Workshop, the Dioxin Symposium will also host the Pre-Dioxin Students
Session “All POPs & Pseudo-POPs”, four major Special Sessions (Biodetection
Methods for POPs and Related Food and Environmental Contaminants; Environmental
Persistence, Analytical Methods and Risk of Human and Veterinary Pharmaceuticals that can
act as pseudo-POPs; Legacy and Emerging Fluorinated Organic Compounds Update and
Progress in Industrial Technology and Sustainable Chemistry to Phase out and Control POPs)
and other special and traditional sessions throughout the meeting.

Sessions
Dioxin 2018 will host a Students Session prior to the main symposium and there will be the
PCB Workshop and five major Special Sessions ((i) Biodetection Methods for POPs and
Related Food and Environmental Contaminants; (ii) Environmental Persistence, Analytical
Methods and Risk of Human and Veterinary Pharmaceuticals that can act as pseudo-POPs;
(iii) Progress in Industrial Technology and Sustainable Chemistry to Phase out and Control
POPs, (iv) Legacy and Emerging Fluorinated Organic Compounds Update; and (v)
European Food Safety Authority Special Session: EFSA Risk Assessments of Persistent
Organic Pollutants in Food and Feed).

Students for Students – Pre-Dioxin 2018 Symposium Students Session “All POPs and
Pseudo-POPs” (Advisors: Mehran Alaee and Eric J Reiner) – is free for the students with
a presentation and registered at Dioxin 2018 and for students without presentation fee is 25 €
(for coffee break and lunch).

The Students Session will be held at the symposium venue which is located very close to the
Old Downtown Kraków area. Only students may present at this gathering and one submission
per registered student is permitted at this time. The oral presentation is to be 20 minutes in
length (including questions). Ideally, all submissions are to be a one page abstract or a four
page short paper (see the guidelines established by the meeting organizers). In addition to the
oral and poster presentations, there will be a short (5 min) poster highlight session. This is to
consist of short oral presentations that are intended to give young researchers the opportunity
to present their work and initial results with an opportunity to receive constructive feedback.
Awards for the best student presentation (oral or poster) will be granted to students for
outstanding presentations at the Students Symposium. Your abstract can be considered as
accepted unless you receive a notice of rejection. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Any supporting company or sponsor of the Students Session is welcome – a platform for a
company displays and inserts will be available.
