Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Learning environment is thought to play an important and valuable role in students

focus, memory, motivation, and overall academic performance. According to U.S.

Department of Education (2004), every student deserves to go to a school with a positive

environment which consists of conditions (such as healthy air to breathe, peaceful and quite

environment, etc.) With classroom shortages, a good outcome cannot be expected from its

school system. Since the student’s resources are neglected, suffering in terms of educational

efficiency is the consequences. This limits the quality of teaching, learning and the interest of

students lowers which leads them to absenteeism.

Classrooms are where the majority of learning processes and activities happen. A

place supposedly should be conducive the development of student’s cognitive abilities,

mental as well as social skills; however, in majority of school in the Philippines this isn’t the

case. According to Department of Education(DepEd) Undersecretary Tonisito Umali said the

lack of classrooms, learning materials, schools that don’t have electricity or schools located

in off-grid areas, and schools that don’t have water sources were among the problems faced

by the agency every school year.

Agusan National High School is a huge school where the students are much more

plenty that the needed classrooms. It is a crowded place and the lack of classrooms are one

of the major problems that really affect the wellbeing of the students. This problem greatly

influences the behavior and the performance of every student. Sharing the same classroom

is the effect of having this issue and changes its original schedule to fit the other classes. The

will of every students decreases as the problem worsen and their determination in going to

school reduce. Some evidences suggest that overcrowding has and adverse impact on

learning. However, studies between the relationship of the lack of classroom and its effect on

students learning has been limited.
