DIFFICULTIES EXPERIENCED OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS IN THEIR

CLASSROOM AT MAXIMO T. HERNANDEZ MEMORIAL

INTEGRATED HIGH SCHOOL

CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Classroom challenges are one of the adequate problems faced by

students. How they communicate, how their environment is going, the class size,
the learning comprehension of students towards their lesson etc. Life as a
student is definitely not a just a “ you are just a student ”. Struggles with
completing homework, studying and revising are commonly addressed, but
sitting in class and making the most of it comes with its own struggles.

The pace of a lesson can vary greatly depending on the teacher, the
subject being covered and the student majority. For some, this pace might not
be ideal. Some students might feel as though they are unable to keep up with
lessons as teachers move from one concept to another before they are done
processing what they have just learnt ( Mindstretcher, 2023 ). Every students
are struggling in their classroom when it comes to the subjects and different
lessons in a day, processing every lesson makes the students struggle more
because some teachers are proceeding to another topic while students are
trying to sink in the lessons.

According to J.K. Garcia, 2020 that students with teachers who take pride
in punishing students often experience stress and boredom. For instance, some
teachers systematically overload students with content and impose nearly
unattainable objectives, make test difficult, and punish students with low
grades. Indolent teachers, on the other hand, are those who deliver boring
lectures, lack basic teaching skills, arrived late, neglect to grade homework, and
make their classes too easy. Students have different skills when it comes to how
they deal with the huge of activities given by the teachers and it is up to them
or their perception for what the reason why that subject has a lot of doings from
that teacher and it makes the students difficult one in a classroom.

As Grace Chen,2022 reported that students are more technologically

advanced than many teachers today, putting instructors at a decided
disadvantage in the classroom. However, a student’s love of technology also
tends to distract him from his schoolwork, according to NEA Today. When
teachers don’t have the techno-savvy to compete with those devices, by
bringing education and technology together, it can be difficult to keep students’
interest and attention to properly teach new concepts. The technology we do
have right now, has a great help and impact to all the student when it comes to
their assignment, activities, researches because it is a material providing the
needs and to make it learning easier but then the students are being too
attached and over using of technology that’s why some students can’t focus on
the lesson and cause a distraction to others.

One challenge is the fact that students are forced to sit for an
extended period of time. This can be very hard on their bodies, especially
considering most students are not moving around much outside the
classroom. More importantly, this study shows that movement helps with
comprehension and memory retention ( J. Breisacher, 2022). One factor of
difficulties faced by the students is being bored in a class, where they are
thinking what will happen next, and the things they will do next instead of
focusing what are happening right now.

The classroom environment can also Impact a student’s learning

experience. Factors such as noise from other students can be a distraction from
studies in classrooms. Noise in corridors during exams or in other quiet zones
breaks concentration and affects learning. Noise in classrooms leads to
increased stress and the teacher having to raise their voice louder, which can
make it difficult for students to concentrate and learn ( Pulsar Instrument, 2023
). Among other factors that affect whether a student has a problem is also the
noise of his environment, which in turn is the loss of the student's sense of work
or study.

Additionally, hot temperatures in a classroom can be difficult for students

because they can lead to discomfort, reduced concentration, and difficulty
focusing on schoolwork. Hot temperatures can make it challenging to focus and
learn effectively ( Sitelogic, 2021). Classroom difficulties tackles various conflicts
that a student are facing including the temperature of a classroom, the focus
and attention of a student may lose if the environment are still the same.

Another important issue facing the education system in the Philippines is

the lack of resources and infrastructure in many schools, especially in rural
areas. This challenge is widespread and affects a significant number of schools
in the country. According to a report by the Department of Education, around
5,000 schools in the Philippines have no access to electricity, while 10,000 have
no access to potable water (N. Bai, 2023 ). In addition to the student's own
study, one or more of the difficulties faced by the student is the lack of
adequate and proper environment in the classroom that he or she enters into
the hygiene of a student. The lack of water and the lack of classrooms affects
students both physically and mentally as a student. It is especially difficult for a
child to learn and gain knowledge if the classroom itself should be home to the
expected completeness of the lesson is also a place that many lack.

Consequently, different problems are faced by students in a classroom. On the

other hand, it requires immediate support and help in order to preserve the
knowledge and improve the quality of knowledge of the students in our
country, in order also to avoid problems that lead only to the path of the
student towards the desire or success of a child. In each problem of the child in
their classroom it reflects on the range of necessary activities that should pay
attention and not be overlooked especially and this is the responsibility of each
child.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK :

Fig.1 Learning by doing of John Dewens Theory 1894

John Dewey and many other practical people think that students should
be exposed to reality. According to him people can only learn by adjusting to
what is going on around them. John Deweys held the view that the teachers
additionally benefit from what their charges are and the ideal classroom is very
similar and has a reason why the environment or the classroom affects one
student.
John Dewey’s study revolves around how a student adapts something in a
classroom or environment that helps to understand the reasons why students
experience suffering in a thing or task more easily.
This study deals with different problems that a child faces within their
classroom. Knowing and also with the help of Deweys’ studies, it will be faster
to give reasons why this happens to children and serve as a base and guide on
how to conduct your studies.

Fig.1 Conceptual Framework

The classroom is home to students to learn every day. But every day inside
the classroom is every problem also faced by the students. Problems must be
known and disclosed in order to provide viable solutions. Some of the factors
why there is a problem in the classroom is the number of students in a room,
the increase in numbers is in the slope especially that sometimes there is
stereotyping, bullying, discriminating and so on there is also a nice as well as
affecting it like building a happy society. Another is the surrounding area of a
classroom, where there is a combined problem with double rooms such as heat,
frost and insufficient student space or small double rooms. Therefore, there will
also be a lack of materials and resources that will make it more difficult for
students to understand each lesson which results in the difficulties of the
students in their classroom.
Having the knowledge and proper classroom will reduce the future
difficulties of each student in their own room, if the materials and resources are
provided with adequate equipment that will help. Expansion of the room to
soften and avoid the heat that is felt, and having a good connection of teachers
and students in each session. In this way, a society within the classroom is more
convenient.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The research has a chief concern regarding to the difficulties experienced of
students in their respective classrooms. To obtain all the essential things
needed, knowledge about this research study, the data and information, the
research sought to answer the following :

1. Determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of

the following:
1.1 Age
1.2 Grade Level
1.3 Classroom size
1.4 Classroom difficulties
2. How does the problems that you experience in a classroom affects
you?
3. How did you manage difficulties you experience?
4. How did you interact with your classmates?
4.1 How did you interact with your teachers?
5. What are the most common problems you experience(d) in a
classroom in terms of:
5.1 Environment
5.2 Socializing
5.3 Academic Status
5.4 Materials / Resources
6. What factors that helps you deal with the problems you experience
in a classroom?
7. What response did you do when you are experiencing those
difficulties in classroom?
Hypothesis
The study tackles the difficulties experienced of Grade 12 learners in their
classroom at Maximo T. Hernandez Memorial Integrated High School tackling
and determining the different difficulties that a student experiencing in their
respective classrooms.
Chiefly there is no significant difference on the factors or components that
make the student experience different difficulties or conflict in their classroom
based on the demographic profile.

Significance of the study

This research is made with the aim to provide the appropriate information
and knowledge to the chosen topic or title from the respondents, literatures,
recent and past studies needed for the expected importance to the individual as
follow:

To the Institution – Through this study, they learned the complaints and
grievances of each student in their experience in a room that is only ignored and
normally told by other people that they can give action and focus.

To the Administration – They can easily detect students who are affected in
a room and quickly find a solution to the student’s future problems.

To the Students – It is worth noting that the future of each student is a matter
of concern and that it is no longer difficult for them to deal with the problem on
their own.

To the Parents – Parents will be more understandable and aware of the various
problems of their students in their rooms.

To the Future Researchers – Serves as a basis and will help as a guide if there
is a parity between the study of students and the study of researchers.

To the Researchers – A deeper understanding of the context of the problem

studied by the researchers will provide sufficient knowledge as the said
researchers are students also.
Scope, Limitation and Delimitation of the Study
The study covers on the Difficulties Experienced of Grade 12 Students in
their Classroom at Maximo T. Hernandez Memorial Integrated High School. The
school serves as a home and the classroom serves the lives of students to live,
through this study learn the future problems of students within a day that
repeats over and over again until the end of the entire school year and this
research focuses on what are the different problems that a student facing and
experiencing in their respective classrooms.
The research study will be conducted in October 2023 at Maximo T.
Hernandez Memorial Integrated High School which focusing on the Grade 12
level including all strands and sections of Grade 12 on the said school. Using the
demographic profile will proves that only Grade12 students are considered as
the target respondents for making the research study possible and succeed.
The research will not cover any other problems that are not connected
regarding with the flow of study. Only about the research study are being central
point by the researchers.
Definition of Terms
Class size – refers to the number of students in a given classroom ( Education
Reform, 2015). This is the population of students in a given classroom, the
measurement of how the section is big or small.
Double room – a room in a hotel with two beds ( Collins Dictionary, 2018 ). A
building especially the classrooms that has second floor.
Environment – It refers to both Abiotic (physical or non-living) and Biotic (living)
environment. (Jagron Josh, 2016 ). The classroom and the school
where the students are studying and being influenced by their
classmates and teachers.
Homework – piecework done at home for pay ( Meriam Webster, ). This is a task
given by the teachers to students for an additional knowledge prior to the
given topic.
Lesson – a passage from sacred writings read in a service of worship ( Meriam
Webster, ). This is the topic consist of activities or exercises for the
students to learn and enhance their skills.
Materials – a physical substance that things can be made from ( Cambridge
Dictionary, ). This are the things including printing materials, papers and
documents that a student have to be able to understand the particular
topic.
Resource - a source of supply or support ( Meriam Webster, ). This are the things
that a student and a teacher are looking for when doing a paper such as
websites, literatures and books.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
The chapter principally presents various research, literatures, books and
studies globally, nationally, and locally which have significant bearings on the
variables on the variables of the study. Every literatures and studies focuses on
the aspect and factors that are connected and aligned with the research study
of the researchers. The literatures and studies are from articles, electronic
materials such as E-Books or PDF are carefully chosen by the researchers.
According to Apolinar (2019), to a large number of pupils per class and
thelack of classroom. It was observed that pupils did not get enough individual
assistance from their teachers during teaching-learning process and some
student complained that they did not get enough individual help from their
teachers that effects them to lack as well the interest in their classes and also
which leads them to absenteeism.
With increasing population within the classroom is also increasing the
possibility that students will not understand a lesson. It is difficult for students
sometimes to respond to and interact with the activities in the classroom
because they do not know how to act on the said task. This problem is just one
in the face of different students within their classroom, who sometimes lose
more or less the desire or strength to participate in the activities because many
are wise and they don't seem to need something.
For example, in one task groupings, the overwhelming number of
students were divided into only two groups in the estimated more favorable an
output, but behind the presentation was the student's pain to interact with
colleagues due to stress and due to failure to move arrangements that would
result in poor output.
A frequent issue students have in class is a lack of drive or motivation.
Boredom, a lack of interest in the topic, or personal problems can all be
contributing reasons. Students should think of creative methods to make their
classes more fascinating and engaging in order to overcome this obstacle.
Students can take part in class discussions, ask, questions, and look for relevant
instances from real life. Additionally, setting goals will give you something to
work toward when you arrive to class (Midstretcher, 2023).
To solve one of the problems faced by students especially being bored
inside the school is to be productive people and stay active at any time. Still
with the previous example, this is also to give a solution, it is being alive and
still acting in class, that even though you are many in a classroom, you have to
keep yourself warm and alive.
Classroom management encompasses a variety of skills and techniques
that teachers can use to create a high-performing learning environment. At its
core, it aims to ensure classes run smoothly, disruptive behavior from students
is kept to a minimum, and teaching materials and activities promote learning.
The ultimate goal is to ensure that both the students and the teacher get the
most out of the classroom experience (Future Learn, 2023).
These problems can be avoided if there are solutions that help students
overcome the various problems a student faces. More students will be able to
get paid and get along with the tasks that need to be passed. For example is
having clean classrooms and facilities. This can only be achieved if each student
who is studying in a particular classroom is cleaned up and united because there
is always one student who can't focus if there is a trash and the focus of that
student will be on the trash which resulted to missing the lesson.
Social problems in the school environment can certainly endanger and
hinder the fulfillment of the goals of education or even the students themselves.
Therefore, it is important for parents to know the forms of social problems in the
school environment that children often face and how to overcome these
problems (Cherish Academy, 2020).
Many of today's young people are left alone with the problem of fear of
sharing it so they are more concerned about what is happening and there is
more conflict to solve a problem immediately. This includes the problems
encountered by students in the classroom and the class that they have been
engaged in and are not just seeking a solution to the further decline in marks
so the parents are wondering why this is the highest grade at school for
learning and reading.
For example, the suffering from a hard and major subject but did not say
that it was so hard and too difficult to understand and still keeping the problem
then the score remained low the performance declined further during the hard
and major period because of the self-sufficient in keeping the problem own.
As Ackerman (2022) stated that the larger classes are proven to make it
more difficult for teachers to set and enforce behavioral expectations, monitor
students, and pay individual attention to each student. Larger class sizes lead to
more disorder in the classroom which ultimately affects student learning. This,
can lead to higher rates of failure, school violence and dropouts when left
unchecked.
As the number of students in a classroom increases, the greater the
likelihood that the more people get a low score because of the influence of
friends, the more the classroom will listen and do things that annoy the
teacher. Such things are the effect of having too many students in a classroom
that it affects students who pursue and study really well that sometimes is also
the result of getting a low score due to noise and chaos of the classroom
caused by the classmates.
For example, there are recitations and examinations that are within a few
minutes. It is inevitable that there will be noise and noise in the classroom due
to each other's students, so the need to read and have satisfying grades will
add to the tension while responding and hesitating due to the effect of noises
of the class.
Throughout the school year, teachers usually provide a lot of feedback
regarding students' work and behavior. It's beneficial to consider asking for
feedback from your students as well. Receiving feedback from your learners
about how you manage your class, the content you're teaching and your
general mannerisms can give you insight into what you're doing well and how
you can improve. In addition, many students appreciate when you value their
opinion, which can strengthen your positive classroom environment (Indeed,
2023).
Having a voice for the development of a classroom and students
themselves can only be achieved if students speak too and become open to
teachers. Examples are the suggestion of things that will help their fellow
students who are in difficulty to learn in the classroom, being open to teachers
if they are suffering to be able to help immediately.
