Assignment-01
Flow Kinematics: Streamline, Pathline and Streakline
Submission deadline: 08 January 2019

Problems:
1. Water is flowing from the oscillating sprinkler head (shown in Fig.) produces a velocity field
given by:

V  u0 sin[ (t  y v0 )]iˆ  v0 ˆj
where u0, v0 and ω are constants.
  3
(a) Determine the streamline that passes through the origin at t  0, , , and
2  2
  3
(b) Determine the pathline that passes through the origin at t  0, , , and
2  2
  3
(c) Determine the streakline that passes through the origin at t  0, , , and
2  2
Graphically present the above flow lines.
Consider the spatial dimension of x  [3, 3] and y  [0, 5] for the graphical presentation. Also
assume u0 / v0  0.5, v0  1 m/s and    rad/s to construct the graphs.

2. Determine the streamline, pathline, and streakline that pass through the origin of coordinates
(0,0) at time t = t′ for the following two-dimensional flow field:

V  U 0   0 cos(  t ) iˆ   0 sin(  t ) ˆj
where U0 is a constant horizontal velocity and ω and ξ0 are the angular velocity and amplitude
of velocity field, respectively which are assumed to be constant.
Graphically show the flow lines.
3. A 2D flow field is expressed in the following index notation:
xi
ui 
1 t
Determine the following quantities for this flow field:
(a) The equation of the streamline that passes through the point (1,1) as seen at t = 0.
(b) The equation of the pathline for a particle released at the point (1,1) at time t = 0.
(c) The equation of the streakline that passes through the point (1,1) as seen at t = 0.

4. The velocity components of an unsteady, plane flow field are given by

u  ( a  b sin  t ) x ,
v   ( a  b sin  t ) y
where the constants a > b > 0.
(a) Find the equation of streamline through the point (x0, y0).
(b) Find the equation of the pathline for a fluid particle which at the time t = 0 was at the point
(x0, y0).
(c) Find the equation of the streakline through the origin (0,0) at the time t = 0.

5. A three-dimensional unsteady velocity field is given as follows:

u  x(1  t )
v  y
w   zt
Determine the expressions of streamline, pathline, and streakline that pass through the point
P(1,1,1) at t = 0.
Plot all the results in a single 3D plot.
[Hints: For the determination of streamlines, you have to solve one plane by one plane; i.e. x-y plane, y-z plane, and z-x
plane. For pathline, you need to eliminate time, t parameter one by one plane. So you will get three different equations
for three different planes (some might be transcendental equations to be solved). To determine the streakline, you have to
follow the same approach as in pathline. You could take help of excel to plot your graphical results]
