ENGINEERING MECHANICS II ASSIGNMENT #5

Direct Normal Stresses

#1 Calculate the stress (in MPa) developed in the following members that are each
subjected an axial tensile load of 90kN
a: M36x3.0 screw
b: L40x80x6
c: HSS50x200x4
d: 150mm steel tubing, 5mm wall thickness
Ans: 104.05 MPa, 131.58 MPa, 46.89 MPa, 39.51 MPa

#2 A UNC 1 x 12 tpi bolt has an axial load of 3500 lbs applied to its end. Compute the
tensile stress in the bolt. What would be the stress in the bolt be if the load was
applied in shear across the bolt?

#3 What is the maximum applied direct tensile force that can be applied to a S15x42.9
standard steel beam if the tensile stress in the beam is not to exceed 6.75ksi?

#4 After the recent snowmageddon, a deck with four short legs made of 6x6 wooden
timber equally supports a total snow and deck weight of 30kips. Compute the
compressive stress in each leg.

Shear Stresses
#5 An aluminum strip needs 2 square blanks punched from it at a time. The sheet of
aluminum is 2.5 mm thick. Compute the generated shear stress if the punching force of
85 kN is applied to knock out the two 20 x 20 mm blanks at the same time.

#6 A notched steel beam is shown below. Compute the shear stress in the steel if a
shearing force of 270KN is applied.
