Practical Teaching Techniques and Observation

Trainee’s Self Evaluation and Reflections on Lesson

Part A - Self Evaluation

1. What went well? Why?

Students understood the scenario and they said/uttered the if-clause very promptly.

2. What didn’t go well? Why?

The scenario didn’t fit the first conditional. The one that I used was suited to teach
second conditional.

3. What would you do differently next time?

I could not cut down on Teacher talk time; so the next time I would get students to speak
more.
I could not sufficiently incorporate information about stress and intonation pattern in the
first conditional in my lesson, next time I would improve on it.
In the practice stage, I did not give formal instructions to the students. Next time I would
give instructions verbally too. Most of the practice activities were individual tasks, next
time round I would prepare group activities for the students.
My use of board was not clean and orderly; I would make sure I use it in an orderly and
organised way.
Last, there was no variety in the sentence patterns in the lesson. I would try to bring in
variety in it.

4. What was your aim and did you achieve it?

My aim was to get the students understand the use of and practice the first conditional. I
am happy that the students understood and practised it.

5. How do you know?

Student’s response was positive and the practice activities were successfully carried out.

6. Were your instructions clear?

The problem with my instructions was that I gave them instructions in written but did not
tell them verbally. Nevertheless, there wasn’t any misunderstanding of the instructions on
part of the students.
7. Were the students engaged?
Students were engaged and they enjoyed the activities.

8. What did they learn?

They learnt to use the first conditional in the context of ‘possibility’.e.g. if I have money,I
will visit Japan.

9. What was the ratio of STT to TTT?

In presentation stage Ratio of TTT to STT was 2:1. In percentage, TTT was 70% and
STT was 30%

10. What classroom aids did you use?

I used blackboard and printed material for activities.

Part B – Reflections

1. How do you feel about this lesson?

I learnt a lot from this lesson. I came to know the short comings of my lesson that I have
already discussed above. Over all the lesson remained good. Rather, not so good not so
bad.

2. Is there anything that you were particularly pleased with?

Before the lesson I thought I would have to face difficulty in eliciting the target
sentence from the students. But contrary to my anticipation they uttered it without any
difficulty which pleased me so much.

3. What have you learnt from this lesson?

I have come to know what it takes to teach elementary or intermediate students with a
PPP method of teaching.
3. How different were your peers’ comments to your own evaluation of the
lesson? Why?
My peers did not say much about my lesson that makes me feel that my lesson was
just O.K and not so special. Un-euphemistically, it was ordinary.

4. What do you think you should work on next time?

There are many a thing I have to work on, like; careful selection of the grammar or
vocabulary point, getting students to speak more, stress/intonation, use of board.
