Videotape Analysis and Reflection Statement

Name: Neftali Canas

Date of Video: 10/6/2022

Brief lesson description:

Address the following items in detailed statements. Use examples and illustrations from
the video.

Planning:

1. What were the goals/objectives for this lesson as stated in your plan?

My main objective was for students will be able to create their own rhythm
sentences and also relate pictures drawn on the board to said rhythms.

2. Describe the overall degree to which you accomplished your goals.

I wish I could say I accomplished my goal but it was hard to tell if students fully
understood the material.

3. What additional standards were addressed in this lesson that meet the ELL,
Reading, or Exceptionality standards studied this semester? How are these standards
manifested in your plan?

I focused on creating a lesson that involved using pictures to connect with words
and rhythms which cater to EL students but also helped students make a connection
with objects and not just the standard takadimi or musical notation for rhythms.

Execution of the Plan:

1. What are some of your personal idiosyncrasies? How can you address them as
you grow as a teacher?

I believe if I focus too much on ensuring that every student hears me I waste
time. What I mean is that when I cant ensure that every student is completely committed
to the activity I waste time by telling them to get ready or “alright you guys ready”. I will
just start the activity rather than waste time.
2. What did you do/not do to set the tone for learning? Would you do anything
differently? If so, what?

I thought I set the tone by asking them questions about Halloween and how their
week went also the warm-up consisted of getting the voice ready to do some exercises.
I also thought I prefaced the lesson by asking the students what their favorite candy was
as seen in minute -28:12

3. Focus on your questioning. What did you notice in terms of the quality of your
questioning? Frequency? Levels? Response/feedback to students? Cite examples.

So in minute -28:12, I lightened the mood by asking them questions pertaining to

what I was going to use in my lesson. For example, I asked the kids what they like most
about Halloween and which candy is their favorite and they were really excited to tell me
their favorites. In minute -17:31, I would ask questions that would pertain to the entire
class rather than individuals and I think for this setting that was for the better in this part
of my lesson. The feedback was good but I had to model what exactly I wanted for them
to answer. In Minute -22:16, I had a student volunteer to give us the next rhythm we
were going to play and I thought this was a great way to assess students individually.

4. How well did you engage ALL learners in this lesson? Would you change
anything about the participation? If so, what would you do differently?

I struggled with reaching each kid as when we were working with drumsticks they
were a lot more distracted. One of the things that I might want to reconsider is maybe
using things that might not make as much noise and also just finding a system that
works to show the kids when it is time to play and when it is not.

5. Discuss the incorporation of the new standards in your instruction.

I thought focusing on involving a more EL-friendly lesson helped students find

another way to create a connection between words and musical concepts. Also, it
helped me be more creative with my planning as I needed to think of a different way to
teach something from how I normally would.

6. What are your greatest strengths in the delivery of this lesson?

I think my greatest strength in this lesson was my warm-up and also the overall
rhythm-making process (choosing students to give the class the rhythm we play).

7. What areas in this lesson need attention and improvement?

One of the things that I need to work on is just not talking as much through reps.
Especially with the little ones, I am used to talking to trained musicians but I quickly
realized that the younger they are the shorter their attention span can be. Also, I need to
find different ways of getting students' attention. I noticed that physical things grab their
attention a lot faster than using words.
8. On a scale of 1 (weakest) to 10 (strongest), rate your overall effectiveness as a
teacher in this experience. Defend your rating with examples.

I would give myself an 8. The reason I believe I am an 8 is that I had a great

vision for how the lesson would go and the activities the students would do it did not go
exactly how I anticipated but I was able to overcome certain things such as students
being distracted and I was able to get them back on track for the most part but that is an
area of improvement. Also, I believe for this lesson I definitely used a sound before sight
as I forgot to really press on that last lesson.
