Magic Square Project

The numbers used are any consecutive series of 9 multiples of number 5.

I am using a 3 x 3 matrix and the numbers: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45.

5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45

1. Each number will be used once and placed in a different square. Once placed in the magic

square they must have the same sum when added in every row, column, and in both

diagonals. First, we must find the fixed sum.

2. You will find the fixed sum by adding all nine numbers together.

For example: 5 + 10 + 15 + 20 + 25 + 30 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 225 (225 is the fixed sum).

3. In order to find the magic number, you must divide the fixed sum 225 by 3 (when using a 3 x

3 matrix).

For example: 225 divided by 3 = 75 (75 is the magic number).

4. Next, you must write equations that will equal to 75 in as many ways possible by using three

numbers from 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45. Begin by adding the largest number to the

smallest number with the difference in the middle. You cannot use any number more than

once in any combination.

5. Using chart above, the largest number is 45, the smallest number is 5. In order to get the
sum of 75, you must add the difference of 25.
For example: 45 + 25 + 5 = 75

The eight combinations are:

45 + 25 + 5 = 75 40 + 20 + 15 = 75
45 + 20 + 10 = 75 35 + 30 + 10 = 75
40 + 30 + 5 = 75 30 + 25 + 15 = 75
40 + 25 + 10 = 75 30 + 25 + 20 = 75
6. In the empty boxes above the numbers you will write the number of times each number was

used in the equations.

2 3 2 3 4 3 2 3 2

5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45

The number in the center (25) will be the most important number because it was used in the

equations the most times and it will be placed in the center of the magic square.

7. Now you will place the numbers in the magic square. Remember, the 25 will be placed in the

center. Place the other four numbers that were used 3 times in the equations on each corner of

the magic square (10, 20, 30, and 40).

For example:

10 30 25

25

20 40

8. Remember that once placed in the magic square they must have the same sum when added in

every row, column, and diagonally.

For example:

10 + 45 + 20 = 75
30 + 5 + 40 = 75 10 35 30
(Column A)
(Column C)

45 25 5 A B
C

20 15 40
10 + 35 + 30 = 75 1
(Row 1)

45 + 25 + 5 = 75 2
(Row 2)

20 + 15 + 40 = 75 3
(Row 3)

35 + 25 + 15 = 75 (Column B)

10 + 25 + 40 = 75 (Diagonally) 30 + 25 + 20 = 75
