From the troops of the Philistines came a champion named Goliath. He was six cubits tall and
one foot tall. He wore a helmet on his head and was dressed in a chain mail. On his legs he had
greaves and between his shoulders he carried a brass javelin. He stopped and shouted to the
army of Israel:
- What are you going out to arrange the battle for? Am I not the Philistine, and you the
servants of Saul? Choose from among you a man who comes against me! If he can fight with
me and overcomes me, we will be your slaves, but if I can more than him and defeat him, you
will be our slaves.
When the Israelites heard these words, they were afraid, but David, a cheerful boy, said to
Saul,
- You can not go against him because you are a boy, and he is a man of war from his youth.
- Your servant has been a shepherd of his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took
some sheep from the flock, I would come after it, strike it and rescue it from its mouth. If he
got up against me, I would grab him by the mane, hurt him and kill him.
David took off his armor. He picked five smooth stones from the stream and put them in the
pastoral bag. With his sling in his hand, he went to the Philistine.
- Come to me and I will give your meat to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field!
"You come against me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I am against you in the name of
the God of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. God will deliver you
into my hand today and I will defeat you. I'll cut off your head.
David put his hand in the bag, and there he took a stone, and threw it with the sling, and
smote the Philistine in the forehead. The stone was stuck in his forehead and it fell flat on the
ground. So David defeated the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and slew him without a
sword in his hand. And David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and cut
off his head.
dijo a Saúl:
