what is different between vertical seismic profile (VSP) and check- shot survey ?
then how is it using ?

Hello Bala ,
how are you ? long time have passed for last talk with you.

Actually, VSP as you know is Vertical Seismic Profile. There is not too much difference between
VSP and Check point survey.
* In VSP the geophones are placed at closed distance than Check point survey, hence previous one
is more accurate than later.

* VSP is used for time to depth conversion by velocity we get and synthetic seismogram building
for better interpretation. Check point survey (CPS) is used only to correlate you normal seismic
section with CPS data, to identify the zone of interest in seismic section.

The overall thing is that VSP is more accurate than CPS, hence it is more reliable in interpretation.

Hi,

I saw a similar discussion in another group a month ago and am copying here the exact response
from that discussion from Taha Ali. I hope this would help.

"The acquisition technique is the same.

In case of check-shots, the geophone is dropped inside the bore hole and fixed at the formation
tops to receive the direct or downgoing seismic waves generated from source (dynamite, vibrator
or air gun) located at the surface near the bore hole. Time depth curve is created by using the first
arrival time with the corresponding depth (after correcting the slant time to vertical) . The curve is
used to define the geological formation tops on the seismic line at the well location for seismic
mapping. Also you can use this time depth data to create synthetic seismogram by using sonic and
density logs of the well.
In case of vertical seismic profiling ( VSP), the geophone is dropped in the bore hole and fixed
every short interval (about 15 meters). Now the contractors use a chain composed of a group of
geophones (5, 12, 24, may be more) to acquire the data in a very short time.
If you acquired data by this way and used only the first arrival , it will be the same like check
shots and you lost money, but this data has to be processed to get a seismic line
which can be correlated and calibrate or defining the geological formation tops on the seismic data
at the well location which is more more more accurate than the check shot method. In addition you
can see the geological formation bellow the TD of the well and more geological information near
the well
The first published book about VSP is written by E. I. Galperin in Russia in 1971 and translated
and published in English by SEG."

Hi Cabir. I will be interested too. My mail is taofiqlawal@yahoo.com

The major difference between a check shot and a VSP is the resolution and sample rate. VSP has
got smaller sample rate therefore it is more accurate. Acquisition method for both are same only
difference is that in VSP more data is acquired for more number of points.

Check shots were taken in the good old days when VSP was not in vogue. As the name itself
implies, to get velocity information, shots were taken at random depths and irregular intervals, to
generate velocity function which could be used for seismic data processing. It suffered from the
defect of averaging velocities from different formations within that intervals.
With VSP, the well geophone can be anchored at formation boundaries which could be known
from electrical logs. Thus, formation velocities can be accurately known. The usual geophone
interval would be 20-30mts.Geophone can be anchored at such places after finding rugosity
/caving of the well so that it anchors strongly. The resulting average velocity curve would be of
great use while processing the seismic data to compare and calibrate.
As the geophone is placed very near to the lithoboundary, even a weak reflector can be seen on the
upgoing wave field when the geophone is moved upwards after each shot. Even multiples can be
identified.
If there are faults between the source and the well, they too can be seen in the upgoing wavefield
and throw can be calculated if the data are good.
Downgoing wavefield would be useful to know the multiple activity and to devise proper decon
parameters.

Hi all,
Nowadays, a borehole survey implicitly includes both check shots for different geological layers
and VSP data for medium to deep horizons. In check shots, we are focused on only the first break
time which is equal to the one way travel time between surface and check points. First break times
are combined with sonic velocity and density logs to calculate synthetic seismogram.
In VSP, all the recorded waves are processed to achieve the corridor stack and many other
outputs..
Check shots result is mainly used, during interpretation, to identify different horizons at the well
location. VSP has much mores uses that must be mentioned in common literature. Regards

The difference is in the information you can catch from the data , Check shot is a information
about Time and depth position of the interpreted horizons (2D-3D) in your well , this is linked
with sonic log to understand if there are shifts in sonic log curve (they must fitted) , is an operation
made by well logging Company.
The position of levels shooted in the well is in corrispondence of main discontinuites.
With this operation you will know the Vertical Velocity (up and down Wave going) that it is
different from seismic velocity that is anysotropic , so from different direction (spatially).

VSP or Vertical Seismic Profile is a different issue.

With vsp you have a seismic section (wideness is dipending from the distance between geophones
and source ) that is corrisponding very accurately with the position (traiectory) of the well , this
time section repesent very well the ray paths in the neighbourough of the well , so you will have
more information than a seismic section , because the ray paths are like focalized.
It is important to know if the picked horizons in seismic corrispond in the well litologic variations
(horizontal discontinuities or fault traiectory).
With VSP you have an imagine of seismic below the Total Depth so you can recognize deep
targets not investigated by drilling program and to extend the drilling depth.

You can have different pattern configurations dipending from the dip of the horizon and well , so it
is more complicated than CSS.

Difference between VSP & Check-shot survey.

VSP

Measure not only the first break but also the reflected events.
Smaller interval (spacing).
VSP records are longer in duration and record full waveform.
Records have Variable gain.
Multi-receiver digital system.
Multiple sources.
High resolution data.

Check-shot

Measure the first break events.

Larger interval (spacing).
Records are short in Duration.
Records have fixed gain.
Single receiver recording system.
Single source.
Low resolution data.

In addition to all the above differences, VSP provides more reliable time-depth curve that matches
the event reflection times on surface seismic data and therefore it is useful for depth conversion of
seismic time maps.

Fixed-source offset and walk above (in deviated wells) VSP surveys provide high resolution
reflection image about and away from the borehole environ, which is useful to confirm and assist
seismic data interpretation, in particular faults.

Walk-away VSP is useful in measuring velocity anisotropy in the subsurface and with proper
processing may provide P and S reflection images and Vp and Vs profile.

I came in late, but has anyone mentioned a walkaway VSP where records are taken with sources
(usually vibrators) at a variety of offsets from the well?
