DAILY LESSON GUIDE IN EARTH & SPACE

School Mapayapa National High School Grade 7

Teacher Learning Geology
Area/Domain
Teaching Date February ____, 2020 Quarter 4th
& Section 7-Magalang

I. OBJECTIVES
Content Standards
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relation of geographical location of the
Philippines to its environment.
Performance Standards
The learners shall be able to analyze the advantage of the location of the Philippines near
the equator and along the Ring of Fire which influences elements that make up the Philippine
environment.
Learning Competency
Recognize that soil, water, rocks, coal, and other fossil fuels are Earth’s materials that
people use as resources (S7ES-IVb3).
Specific Learning Outcome(s)
At the end of the lesson, at least 75% of the students should be able to:
● discuss the layers of soil and their importance.
● perform an activity on soil layers.
● integrate the value of organic-based soil preparation.
II. CONTENT
Topic/Subject Matter: Layers of the Soil
● The mixture of weathered rock fragments, mineral grains, organic debris and even the
presence of moisture is known as soil.
● The layers of the soil are topsoil (contains small rock particles and decayed matter called
humus), subsoil (beneath the topsoil and made up mostly of pebbles), and bedrock (formed
when solid rock breaks up & poorest material in the soil).
● There are five horizons for the layers of the soil which are designated as O & A (topsoil), B
(subsoil), and C & R (bedrock).
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
● Nueva Espaňa, R.C. et al., (2013). Science and Technology 7, ABIVA Publishing House, Inc.
● Cadiz, A.P. et al., (2016). Fundamentals of Earth Science, Mindshapers Publishing Co.
● Cadiz, A.P. et al., (2017). Fundamental of Earth and Life Science, Mindshapers Publishing Co.
IV. PROCEDURES
ELICIT (Reviewing previous lesson)
● Call 3 male and 3 female students to answer the following on the board:
● For male students: Refer to a globe & determine the city that is located on the following
estimated coordinates (a) 56°N and 38°E; (b) 12°S and 77°W; (c) 1°N and 104°E
● For female students: Refer to a globe and give the estimated coordinates of the following
cities (a) Paris, France; (b) Manila, Philippines; (c) Beijing, China
ELICIT (Establishing a purpose for the lesson)
● Two prominent Filipino individuals (one male and one female) in the aspect of agriculture will
be presented to the class. The students will recognize the pictures and share any idea about
their works.
ENGAGE (Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson)
● The teacher will present a short video clip showing the layers of the soil.
● The teacher will then ask the students to answer the given guide questions.
ENGAGE (Discussing new concepts and practicing skill #1)
● As a group activity, the students will do an activity on soil layers (see attached sheet)
EXPLORE (Discussing new concepts and practicing skill #2)
● The teacher will present flashcards to students showing pictures to associate the importance
of each layer of the soil.
EXPLAIN
● The teacher will present data from Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR) showing the status of soil in the country. Ask the students to analyze the graph and
give their interpretation.
EXTEND
● The students will examine the pictures showing vegetable plantations and various crops then
present their insights about those pictures
ELABORATE
● The students will be given three pieces of cartolina/colored paper shaped into circle, triangle,
and square.

EVALUATE
● Identification: Give what is being asked in the following. Write the correct answer before the
number.
_______________1. It is a layer of the soil formed when solid rock breaks up & poorest
material in the soil.
_______________2. It is a horizon of the soil wherein there is accumulation of fine clay
particles enhances water retention in the subsoil.
_______________3. It is a layer of the soil which contains small rock particles and decayed
matter.

Something from today that

Somet
_______________4. It is a horizon of the soil which has large layer of mineral matter where
biological activity is high.
_______________5. It is a layer of the soil which is made up mostly of pebbles.

EXTEND (Additional activities for application/remediation)

● As a group activity, ask the students to make organic-based soil. They can watch a sample clip
on Youtube as a guide. Remind the students to document their work. They will present their
work after two weeks.
VI. REMARKS
Each observer will write his/her remarks here!

VI. REFLECTION
The teacher will write his reflections here!

Activity # ___
Layers of the Soil

Objectives: At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
1. identify the horizontal layers of the soil and their importance.

Materials: Picture of the soil, Reading article

Procedures:
1. Read the article about soil layers.
2. Examine the picture of the soil given to you.
3. Identify the layers of the soil based on your understanding about the article on the layers
of the soil. Write your answers in the boxes provided.
4. Answer the guide questions below.
4.1 Did you identify easily the each layer of the soil? If yes, how did you do it? If no,
why you did not identify it?

4.2 What are the observable characteristic in each layer of the soil that supports your
idea?

Reflection: Write your feedback here!

Layers of the Soil

The soil is made up of distinct horizontal layers.

B Horizon (Subsoil) is a layer that contains clay and mineral deposits.

R Horizon (Bedrock) is a solid rock layer of the soil.

A Horizon (Topsoil) is made up of humus (decayed organic matter) mixed with mineral
particles. Seeds germinate and plant roots grow in this dark-colored layer.

O Horizon (Organic) is layer of the soil made up mostly of leaf litter and humus (decomposed
organic matter).

C Horizon (Parent Material or regolith) is a layer that consists of slightly broken-up rocks and
has no or little organic material that is why not many things live down here except for the
biggest tree roots.
