Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Maggie McFadden Date: 2/19/21

Group Size: 24 Allotted Time 30 min Grade Level 4th

Subject or Topic: Science-Soil

Common Core/PA Standard(s):
Standard - 3.3.4.A2-Identify basic properties and uses of Earth’s materials including rocks,
soils, water, and gases of the atmosphere.

Learning Targets/Objectives: The students will be able to draw and explain what is in soil and
how it is created by completing guided notes and drawing diagrams of soil and weathering.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. Guided notes 1. Students will need to fill out guided notes
2. Drawing and labeling parts of soil that go along with the google slide show
3. Drawing and labeling 1 type of weathering about soil.
…. 2. Teacher will be collecting the drawings
students create.
3. Teacher will be collecting the drawings
students create

Assessment Scale:
1. Teacher will be taking note of who is actively writing down notes and listening to the
lesson
2. Students will be asked to draw soil and include everything that is found in soil
including living organisms, nonliving organisms, and rocks. Drawing of soil including
all 3 labels- proficient. Drawing of soil with only 2 labels- basic, will be monitored. No
drawing, or drawing with only 1 label- considered below basic and will need
remediation.
3. Students will be asked to draw an example of weathering. They will need to draw a
picture of either wind, water, or ice weathering a rock. They will need to write a
sentence under their picture explaining what they drew. Drawing and explanation-
students are considered proficient. Drawing with no explanation- students will be
considered basic and will be monitored.

Subject Matter/Content: All about soil

Prerequisites: Soil is the scientific name for dirt.
Key Vocabulary:
 Soil- the top layer that covers Earth.
 Weathering- breaks rocks into smaller pieces
 Organic material- decaying parts of plants and animals.
 Microorganisms- Tiny organisms in soil that are too small to see with the naked eye
Content/Facts:
 Soil is made of weathered rocks, living organisms and decaying plant and animal
material.
 Plants need soil to grow.
 Weathering is the process that breaks rocks into smaller pieces. The process takes
thousands of years. The pieces of rock get so small that they become soil.
 Weathering is caused by wind, water and ice.
 Leaves that fall from trees, and animal waste break down into soil.
 Decaying parts of plants and animals are called organic material. Organic material
helps new plants grow.
 Soil contains living organisms such as earthworms, insects, fungi, and bacteria.
 A lot of organisms are too small to see with the naked eye, these organisms are called
microorganisms.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
 Remind students about the video they watched the day before about soil.
 Ask students what they think soil is.
 Give them time to think and respond.
 Ask them if they remember anything they saw on the test about soil.
 Give them time to think and respond.
 Talk about how today we are going to be taking notes about what exactly soil is.
 Explain that while we are going through the slide show, students need to be filling in
the guided note sheet that was provided for them.

Development/Teaching Approaches

 Start the first slide in the google slide.

 Explain what soil is and what is in soil.
 Remind students that they need to be filling in the blanks on their notes.
 Go to the next slide.
 Explain what weathering is.
 Give time for students to fill in their notes.
 Go to next slide
 Explain what is on the next slide.
 Give students time to fill in notes. Repeat this process until the end of the presentation.
 While presenting, ask students information that was just discussed on the slide to
ensure they are paying attention and writing down what they need to be wring down.
 Go over the pictures that are at the bottom of their guided notes.
 Remind students that they saw these picture throughout the presentation.
 Have students write down what the pictures are showing under the picture.
 Tell them they can go back to this page if they need a refresher on soil.
 Explain that now for their independent work they need to draw 2 pictures. One picture
will be a picture of soil, and they need to label the 3 things that are found in soil. The
other picture will be an example of weathering. They can draw wind, water, or ice
breaking down rock. They will need to explain what they drew under their picture.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
 Remind students that they need to complete and submit their drawings.
 Ask students questions about what they learned today. One from each slide that we
went over.
 Ask if anyone has any questions.
 Give time to respond to questions.
 Explain that the next class we will be talking about weathering a little more in depth.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
I have 2 students who preform at a 1st grade level. They will be given the notes, and I will have
them highlight the words that everyone else will be filling in. They will be asked to draw a
picture of soil with 1 living organism in it. (They will be asked to draw a worm in the soil).

Materials/Resources:

 Guided note sheet

 Google Slide
 iPads
 Smartboard
 Drawing app
