How best to use…

Tracy Evans Stone Effect Paste
This month Tracy Evans looks at the different ways to use Stone Effect Paste. You may think the
stone-like finish has just one or two uses, but did you know that you can mix it with coloured paste,
or embed die-cuts into it? It’s time to experiment!

What is it?
Stone Effect Pastes are opaque, water-based pastes with a matte, stone-like
finish. The pastes are hard and permanent but still flexible when dry. This
makes them fantastic for masculine projects and also for giving wonderful As the pastes are thick in consistency

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

ways to achieve consistently

great product shots.. with
Worked hard to create a fabulous card and can’t wait to show it off? The image you share can have a big impact.
On behalf of Folksy, a place to buy and sell handmade work from independent makers in the UK, Lyndsey James
has some great photography tips for consistently taking professional-looking photos of your cards and crafts.

Start with the right background Find your photo style

The background of your photo sets the scene
which is why it is always a good place to start
when creating a winning shot, especially
for small products such as cards where
there is little room for props. Choose a rustic
farmhouse table and you are suggesting
a homely scene to your viewer, opt for
whitewashed wood and you could be suggesting a coastal theme, and so on.
The right choice means that most of the styling effort is done for you and your props can
then be minimal and simple. So how you do decide on the right background? Where would
the ideal location be and what would it look like? A cosy country kitchen? A wedding
venue? Next, think about the furniture or textures that you might find in those settings
and try to replicate them at home by finding small pieces of them. Why not use a sheet
from a paper pad?

Shoot from a direct angle and watch the scene grow

Think of your props and backgrounds
choices as a route to achieving a
consistent stylised look and select them
carefully. One way to achieve your own
photo style is to use similar backgrounds
or props in every photo. Don’t worry about
it looking boring or repetitive, having a
consistent style with a common theme
across your images will mean that people
come to recognise your work. Perhaps you
will decide on marble backgrounds across
all of your shots and mix up your props,
or maybe pressed flowers are your thing
and all shots will include one even if the
backgrounds change. Have a think about
an image style that will work for your
brand and try to stick with it.

Thank you to Lyndsey James, founder of

Photo Boards® photography backdrops
& the Photocraft® School of Photography -
There is an increasing trend in photography for layered shots with a flat base background as www.lyndsey-james.co.uk
a starting point. This kind of direct facing set-up makes styling your scenes so easy and they
look great! Imagine your scene to be like a theatre set with lots of layers from front to back. Buy beautiful handmade gifts and craft supplies from
Start with your camera directly facing your background, whether that is looking forward for Britain’s best designers and makers at folksy.com
a room scene or looking directly down for flatlays, then one by one introduce props from the
sides of your scene and build them in layers to add depth and interest. Use a tripod so that you
can watch the scene grow, and by taking the time to consider how each props looks through
the camera as you add it, your final image will look more professionally styled.

Strive for clarity
Professional photos always look so crisp and clear but you don’t
need a professional level of camera skills to achieve photos with
clarity. A simple change of ISO will ensure the beautiful tones
and colours are not lost and you can even do this on your camera
phone. Switch your ISO from the AUTO setting to a low number.
Controlling your digital ISO is like choosing which film type to put
in your camera – higher numbers produce a grainier effect and
lower numbers a smoother, cleaner effect. Grain/noise as it is also
known, can be a beautiful effect when controlled, but if left on
AUTO ISO your camera/smartphone will often select a high ISO
number by default, giving your photos a grainy appearance and
dramatically reducing tonal detail. You might not even notice the
difference until you download your photos and see them up
close. Manually setting your ISO to 400 or lower (I love to use
100 or 200) will ensure beautiful end results. You might need a
tripod to stabilise your camera because a lower ISO setting means
slower shutter speeds as the camera becomes less sensitive to light.

Top tip!
One question I hear a lot with dies is ‘What’s the best type of adhesive to
use?’ For small pieces, like the flower motifs you see here, I use a glue
stick or white PVA glue with a precision tip. For larger, more intricate
pieces like the lattice design, I use spray mount adhesive.

Hello! I just had to say as a new subscriber I loved the June eddition.
I fell in love with the stamps, I felt they would be so useful for lots of
projects. The only problem was they were too long for my stamping
blocks but I soon solved that by using a clear plastic ruler. When I first
looked at the free papers I adored the background papers so sweet,
but not sure on the toppers. I don’t know how I could have had doubt,
I have used them with Tattered Lace and Sweet Dixie dies, they’re
perfect and so adorable. I am so looking forward to my next issue.
Carol McCarthy

Just finished 8 cards. Really liked these designs, very on trend x

Kirstie Parkinson.

Sharing with you a few cards I made using the beautiful papers and
stamps free with the latest issue of Making Cards Magazine I love
the colours of the pretty papers and the border stamps are fab!

TOP TIP
Use washi tape as a
sticky ribbon to create
a sentiment for your card.

Kathy Hodson is craft coordinator at Trimcraft, showcasing the Dovecraft, Trimcraft,

First Edition and Simply Creative ranges on Create & Craft TV. Kathy shares her thoughts,
tips and hot products in this feature exclusively for Making Cards!

Hello! My current hot product...

I have been thinking about the way that I design cards and where the
inspiration comes from. Most of the time, the cards I create are based
around a new product launch or items that will be available on an upcoming SIMPLY CREATIVE
Trimcraft Inspirations show on Create & Craft TV. While it can seem limiting to PAPER PAD –
only be able to use one collection, I have found that it can really help to focus ENCHANTMENT
the mind and give me some direction for my card design.

With so many samples to make

I like to mix up some clean and
simple designs with some more
time consuming projects that My last crafty

For these cards I used the brand new Simply Creative paper pads. The Fiesta AND A WOOD

At the other end of the scale are these clean and

READER PROJECT

HANDPICKED
We receive lots of reader cards here at Making Cards, some of which really deserve to be
in the spotlight. This gorgeous design, which ties in with our tropical theme, is by Lisa West.

A bit about me
I have been crafting
on and off since I
was a child, but my
passion for paper
craft, in particular
card making
started seriously
14 years ago. In
2010 when my eldest child was a
few months old I started my blog,
www.craftingbelle.blogspot.com,
and through it have made many crafty
friends, from all corners of the world and
started a journey which has led to being
part of the design teams for several
fabulous companies.
