Microsoft Security Essentials

In Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, Windows Defender provides the same level of protection
against malware as Microsoft Security Essentials. You can't use Microsoft Security Essentials
with Windows 8 and Windows RT, but you don't need to-Windows Defender is already
included and ready to go.

To Locate Windows Defender in Your Windows 8.1:

Step 1: Go to Control Pannel

Step 2: Double Click on Windows Defender


For updating the Windows Services or Windows Defender, you need to configure
WSUS(Windows Server Update Services).

Following are the steps to configure your windows machine for WSUS
1. Log in to your system as an Administrator .
2. open run(Window Key + r)
3. type gpedit.msc in the run menu and press OK.
4. The Group Policy editor will appear. Navigate to Computer Configuration->Administrative
Templates->Windows Components-> Windows Update as shown in Figure
5. Select and double click at “Specify intranet Microsoft update service location” and the follow-
ing window will appear. Now, click the enable radio button and also specify the server address as
http://202.141.81.251 in both the text boxes as shown below and finally click OK.

Once the above setting is over, your machine will start receiving updates from the WSUS server.
After successful installation, the machine may require to be reboot.
Important Note:

1. Update & Installation can be only done with Administrator account.


2. Bypass local intranet addresses ( 202.141.*.*, *.iitg.ernet.in,*.iitg.ac.in) in your IE browser.
3. Please make sure that your machine is ready for receiving Automatic updates by navigating
through Control Panel --> Security Center-->Automatic Updates and verify that it is “ON”.

Installing Updates for your Windows 8 Machine

Step 1: Go to control Pannel -> Windows Update


Step 2: Check for updates

Step 3: Install Updates


After Successfully installing your updates you might be required to reboot your
machine.
