CALLIBRATION OF ROTAMETER.

INTRODUCTION:
Rota meters are used in industries for flow measurement of fluids. Rota meters are worked
on principle of variable area meter.
It consists essentially of a plummet or float, which is free to move up or down in a vertical
tapered glass tube. The fluid enters at bottom of tube and causes the float to rise until the
annular area between float and tube wall such that the pressure drop across this
construction is just sufficient to support the float. A scale is given out side the tube to
measure the quantity of fluid passing through tube. Position of tube is may be visually noted
as an indication of the flow.

PROCEDURE:
1. Fill storage tank by water.
2. Open by-pass valve completely.
3. Initially shut valve of rota meter completely.
4. Now start flow through rota meter.
5. Start stop watch immediately after water starts to fill in measuring tank.
6. Note down the float position on scale.
7. Note the amount of water collected in measuring tank.
8. Slowly increase flow rate and repeat the procedure for different flow rates of water
at different float position.
9. Draw a graph of flow rate v/s level of float and scale reading.
10. Draw a line on graph as a true flow rate v/s reading.
11. Now the rota meter is calibrated for different flow rates.
12. Repeat the procedure for different positions of floats and check the graph paper
reading by plotting points on it.
