Chen Dacan graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1964 and taught at the
Conservatory for 20 years. Apart from being an accomplished erhu player he is also a special-
ist in Chinese religious music (Taoist and Buddhist). He edited and published "Chinese Taoist
Music" in 1986 - 87, and produced a series of television programmes and recordings in China
about Chinese religious ceremonies. He contributed a chapter on Chinese religious music to
the "Great Encyclopaedia of China".
During 1988 and 1989 he conducted research into Chinese religion in France and gave con-
certs in over forty French towns. In 1990 he moved to England and became the leader of
the London Chinese Orchestra. He has since played concerts all over Britain and appeared in
numerous TV and radio programmes.
Cheng Yu was born in Beijing, China. Her interest in Chinese traditional music was inspired
by her father, who was a well known pipa soloist at the China Central Orchestra of National
Music and currently director of the Chinese Pipa Research Society. She was taught by her
father at seven and gave concerts at the age of nine. She won the National Youth Competition
of Traditional Music Instrument Performances at the age of 13.

In 1981 she was selected to the Xi an Conservatory of Music to further her studies in pipa
theory and performance, and also to study guoqin performance (a 7-stringed Chinese zither).
During her study, she won the ''All Chinese Traditional Instruments Competition" in 1983 and
held concerts with other musicians in USA, Japan, Oman and Singapore.
She joined the Chinese Central Orchestra of National Music as a pipa soloist in 1985. She
travelled widely throughout China holding concerts with the orchestra and participated in
music dubbing of many films and in music recordings. She came to Britain in 1988. Cheng Yu
has performed all over Britain with the London Chinese Orchestra and has participated in
many activities promoting Chinese culture in Britain. She has also taken part in many music
festivals and other cultural events all over Europe.
Li He was born in Beijing, China. He began to play the flute at the age of nine and made his
stage debut at the age of fourteen. Between 1981 and 1983 he was enrolled in the Chinese
Academy of Music. He was actively involved in radio and stage performances. His talents have
been widely praised by audiences and musical experts. While studying in Japan in 1987, he suc-
cessfully organised Chinese musical concerts with his contemporaries. In February 1987, he
was invited by the Overseas Broadcasting Channel of the BBC to participate in a live concert
for world broadcasting along with famous Chinese musicians such as Chen Dacan and Cheng
Yu. After this live concert he performed at the Royal Theatre in London on several occasions.
His work has greatly helped the promotion of Chinese music. Li He is not only a musician, but
also an acupuncturist. His forefathers have been acclaimed physicians for several generations
and he has inherited their medical vocation. He has worked in this profession in China, Japan
and Britain. His musical and medical talents have been widely acknowledged.
Chinese Fiddle
Fiddles (huqin) are played in all parts of China. Fiddles, including the two-stringed erhu,
became popular in China around 900 AD, and so have a history of more than 1,000 years.
Pipa
The pipa is a 4-stringed plucked lute with a pear-shaped body. It became very popular in
court music during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). It is still a main instrument in a traditional
Chinese music orchestra.
