Description
1.0 1.0 Installation of Standard Footing Resistance

1.1 Upon completion of foundation works, standard Tower Footing Resistance (TFR)
shall be installed. It consists of ground steel tape (25mm x 3mm thick) to be laid
diagonally in excavated trench of 600mm depth. The ground steel tape should be
connected to each tower leg. At the intersection of two ground steel tape, copper
cladded rod (16mm diameter x 9 meter long, up to a maximum) shall be driven into
the ground and connected to the steel tape.

1.2 The steel tape shall be laid out straight at the bottom of trenches, properly connected
to the tower legs and backfilled. Mud, debris and vegetation shall not be used as
backfill materials.

1.3 Footing resistance shall be measured and record shall be kept before installation of
ground wire.

2.0 2.0 Installation of Additional Grounding

2.1 If the value of the grounding resistance for any tower location exceeds permitted
value the additional grounding shall be installed. Excavate two(2) 60m long trench of
at least 600mm depth which is diagonally in opposite direction to the tower leg.

2.2 Install galvanized steel wire (7x4mm) into the trench and connect one end to the lug
and bolted to the tower stub.

2.3 Backfill the installed wire, backfilling the soil to the degree at least equal to the
surrounding area.

2.4 Measure the tower grounding resistance by approved method. If the grounding
resistance is still higher than the specified value, repeat the above procedure for the
leg located diagonally opposite of the leg that additional grounding have just been
installed but one leg at a time.

2.5 Measure the grounding resistance again and if the result of the measuring is still over
the specified value, repeat the same procedure of above and measuring the result of
the grounding resistance.

2.6 Record all data with regard to grounding resistance to appropriate form, as per Tower
Inspection and Testing Plan.

3.0 3.0 Exothermic Welding

Exothermic welding process is a molecular chemical reaction between copper oxide and aluminium,
generates tremendous superheat with molten metal reaching approximately temperature up to
2600°C ( 4000°F ). The process can be completed itself automatically without external source of
power or heat.

Exothermic welding withstands about 5 times higher than clamp's connection in mechanical force.
Unlike compression and bolt clamp, exothermic welded joint become homogeneous metal.

Suitable for grounding and lightning protection's connections, that is, copper to copper, copper to
steel, copper to stainless steel and stainless steel to stainless steel.

Method Of Statement for Copper Tape to Copper Tape

on Straight Joint (BB7) and Tee Joint (BB14)

1. Ensure that both copper tapes are flat (not wavy) so

that it fits nicely into the mould.
2. Clean the surface of both copper tapes with a card
cloth brush and then ensure that the surface are free
from dirt, oil & dry by heating it with a burner.
3. Secure both copper tapes with the mould and check if
both copper tapes are snugly fitted to the mould.
4. Then seal the cavities between copper tapes and
mould with dux seal to prevent leakage of weld metal.
5. Ensure that a correct metal retaining disk properly in
the bottom of the mould crucible.
6. Pour the weld metal into the crucible and spread the
starting powder over the weld metal and mould edge.
7. Close the mould lid and ignite with a flint gun from the
side directing it to the starting powder.
8. The reaction will take place safely within the mould.
9. Refrain from opening the mould for another 10 seconds
before checking on the joint.
