much +ous significance. Misunderstandmg any and all Indian dancing as "war dances"
and *f "threatened" the white man prohibited Indian dances until the early 20h century.
Over time, uibes joined together in these festivities and with the emergence of a new-found
Native American pride the old ceremonieswere revitalised. This led to inter-tribal pow wows
where dances, songs, and other observances were shared.
In the many different pow wows held by pow wow clubs throughout the county, dancing
iemains the highhght and main feature. There are ceremonial as well as social dances and
Other activities include feasting, give-aways, arts and crafts sales, raffles, singing and dancing
competitions, and the honouring of special guests and veterans. The pow wow itself has
been transplanted to the cities, where many of the Indians now live. Each pow wow dub,
consisting of volunteers, takes the year-long responsibility of planning and raising money for
this annual event.
At these times, differences are put aside and traditions are celebrated, strengthening an entire
race of people.
The Ojibway (+used: Chippewa) call themselves: Anisbinah - "the onginal people" or
"original man". Their hguage is spoken by about 50,000 people in the northern USA and
southern Canada. The Oftmvll, while always having been independent from the Ojibway,
speak essentially the same language. These two mbes have been members of a longstanding

powerful alliance which often dashed with the Iroquois Confederacy and the Sioux.
The Ojibway people were less devastated by European epidemics than their Algonquin

and today nearly all Ojibway reservations are, though greatly reduced in size, within their orig-
inal territories.

rapid chanp and codicts with Europeans settlers. The Lakota were forced to give up their

Today many Lakota hzve relocated fiwn reservations to cities where they continue a rich

Member aibes of the Blackfoot Confederacy today live on reservations in Montana,
USA and Alberta, Canada. They refer to themselves as the Niitsitapi - "the real people". They
are a member of the Algonquin lingistic group and their language is Niit4ussin - "the real
language". The confederacy consists of four different mbes: the Pikuni/Pitgan, North Pigan
Pikuni, the B&wa"Kaitaab and Bhc@oot/Sihika. They originated from the Great Lakes region
and migrated southwards, hunting buffalo. In the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851, the feded
government authorized them to use a huge part of Montana north of the Missouri River and
east of the Continental Divide. This treaty formed the eventual Blackfeet Reservation. In
1888 Co-s ratified the Sweetgrass Hills Treaty, breaking up the big northern Montana
Indian reservation and setting up the reservations of Fort Peck, Fort Belknap and Blackfeet
with roughly their present day borders.
In 1877,the l3loods and the northern Blackfeet signed a treaty with the Canadian govem-
1 ment, resmctiog them to designated reservations in Alberta.
