Princeton House Behavioral Health Begins Women’s Programs in North Brunswick
Expands Access to Women’s Mental Health Services in Central New Jersey
North Brunswick Township CDP, NJ, October 22, 2010 -- In response to a growing d emand for services that address the mental health needs of women, Princeton Hous e Behavioral Health (PHBH) is now offering its specialized set of Women’s Programs in North Brunswick. The arrival of these programs represents a significant expansion of women’s mental health services in Central New Jersey by PHBH, as previously these services had only been offered from its Princeton, Hamilton and Cherry Hill locations. “We’ve seen increasing demand for services from Middlesex County, with some women no w traveling an hour or more,” said Nathalie Edmond, Psy.D., director of PHBH Women s Programs. “Bringing our Women’s Programs to North Brunswick improves access to the specialized behavioral health care that women need.” The programs are organized into four tracks: Women’s Wellness; Women’s Trauma; Women’s Trauma and Addiction; and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) Skills. Mental illnesses often affect women and men differently – some disorders are more common in women, and some express themselves with different symptoms. The increa sed understanding of these differences has brought about more specialized treatm ent like the Women’s Programs of PHBH, a unit of Princeton HealthCare System. Research has shown that women have better outcomes in such “gender-sensitive” progra ms where therapists have greater insight into women’s perspectives, their response s to different treatment approaches and even the different impact medication can have on their physiology. For example, women who have experienced trauma tend to have better outcomes in women’s only group therapy sessions, where they feel a gr eater sense of safety, and are more likely to share their personal experiences, said Edmond. The Women’s Programs will be offered on an outpatient basis from PHBH’s existing Nor th Brunswick site at 1460 Livingston Avenue following a 6,200 square-foot expans ion for new group therapy rooms, consultation rooms and offices for physicians a nd clinicians. PHBH has also launched a centralized admissions number -- (609) 688-3707 -- wher e people can call to obtain information or schedule an appointment for any of th e Women’s Programs regardless of location.
