Engineering Services Examination 2019
Introduction Eligibility Selection Process Exam Pattern
❑ The Engineering Services Examination (ESE), commonly known as Indian Engineering Services (IES), is
conducted annually by UPSC to recruit engineers for Services / Posts in four categories: Civil,
Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Telecommunications. A candidate can apply for admission to
the examination in any one of the categories mentioned above.
❑ There are approximately 581 vacancies to be filled through ESE 2019.
❑ The candidates will be allotted to various Services / Posts strictly in accordance with their merit position,
preferences exercised by them and number of vacancies, subject to their medical fitness.
❑ After final selection, the candidates are posted in techno-managerial roles in various Ministries and
Departments of GoI, such as, Railways, Ordnance Factories, Telecom, Border Roads, Naval Armaments,
IDSE, etc., as Class-I / Group A & B (Gazetted) officers.
Age limit
A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 01
January 2019 i.e., he / she must have been born not earlier than 02 January 1989 and not later than 01
January 1998. The upper age limit of 30 years will be relaxable in certain cases as mentioned in the UPSC
Notification.
Educational qualification
A candidate must have obtained a degree in Engineering or other equivalent alternate qualifications as per
the UPSC Notification.
NOTE
The above eligibility criteria under each section are given for general informational purposes only. Please
read the detailed conditions of eligibility in the Engineering Services Examination, 2019 Notification

❑ Candidates are required to apply online on the UPSC website. Detailed instructions for filling up online
applications are available on the above mentioned website.
❑ The eligible candidates will be able to download the e-Admission Certificate three weeks before the
commencement of the examination from the UPSC website.
❑ The application process for the Engineering Services Examination 2019 is now closed.
❑ The examination will be conducted according to the following plan:
o Stage-I: Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination for the selection of candidates for the
Stage-II Examination
o Stage-II: Engineering Services (Main) Examination
o Stage-III: Personality Test
❑ Both Paper I and Paper II are objective type (multiple choices) questions papers. All questions carry
equal marks.

❑ There are four alternative for the answers to every question and only one correct answer. For each
question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (1/3rd) of the marks
assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
❑ The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main / Stage-II Examination will be about six to seven
time the total approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year through this examination.
❑ Both Paper-I and Paper-II are paper-pen / written exam and consists subjective conventional (essay)
type questions. The questions must be answered in English.
In the Personality Test special attention is paid to assess the candidate's capacity for leadership, initiative
and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical
application and integrity of character.
Final merit
Marks obtained by the candidates in the Stage-I: Preliminary Examination, Stage-II: Main Examination and
Stage-III: Personality Test would determine their final ranking. Candidates will be allotted to the various
services keeping in view their ranks in the examination and the preference expressed by them for the
various services / posts.
