Reliability Introduction

 The current distribution system is evolving to become more complex every single day due to
the gradually increasing demand and with customers having highly sensitive loads. So an
interruption causes severe impact in the load equipment itself which along with the failure
statistics of the customer reporting the financial losses to the utility company, emphasizes
the need for reliability evaluation.

 Reconfiguration is opening and closing of sectionalizing and tie switches. The switching must
keep the radiality in position, reduce the losses and relieve the load of the feeders.

 Installation of Distributed Generators (DG) in the distribution network has become an

economical solution for voltage profile improvement and has also reduced the need for
expansion of the substation before it is inevitable. The penetration of DGs are on the rise
which has improved the reliability and quality of service.

 The right placement of DG with appropriate size will provide maximum benefit to the
customer as it reduces the interruption of power even though there is a short fall of main
generation.

 Implementing reconfiguration along with DG placement will boost the reliability of the
system as it reroutes the required power to the customer even when there is a fault.

 So computing reliability of a distribution network with reconfiguration and DG placement is

a dire need other than calculating the loss minimization and voltage improvement.

 Backward forward sweep method is used to analyse the power flow in the radial distribution
system which gives computational efficiency and solution accuracy.
