Welcome back to Alternative energies (earth friendly)

New kind of batteries by using compressed air. I´m Jhon Velasco and I´m Mónica

(music)

Nowadays the climate change is becoming increasingly dire, so the use of alternative energies
for electrical energy generation is necessary. For example, the eolic generation is a good
solution, but there is a problem, the energy production is not constant through the day due to
the dependency of the air behavior.

For that reason, a group of Scottish scientists proposed to store energy by compressing air into
rocks.

Oh! That sounds like a crazy idea, how could it be possible?

(music)

Experts say that it is possible by using porous rocks that you could find in nature. Anyerson, a
mechanical engineer from National University of Colombia, says the stones are able to store
energy by using the internal cavities in them.

First, not all the stones are porous, only a few amount of them have this feature. For example
the granite stone doesn’t have them, on the other hand the sandstone, which you can find
under sea, has them. The porous are important in this because they can link and create
cavities. Now the air can flow into the rock through the cavities, then if you increase the
pressure of the air, it will become compressed inside it. Next you need to release and drive the
air through a turbine to generate electrical energy.

The method sounds very easy, you need a stone, air and put air inside it, but the idea is not
practical now

-Okay, first it’s necessary to clarify that this is a theoretical method to keep energy. Although it
could really works if we consider the current computational simulations based on porous
media compressed air energy storage or the so called PM-CAES made by Scottish Scientists

-okay we know that at this moment Germany and USA have compressed air energy storage
plants, called CAES so in this case exists in old mines of salt, that means this idea is working
until today but the new plan has a novelty

-The novel idea is compress air in underwater rocks…
