Since I was a child, I have always wondered if all the black smoke that I saw in the sky

was good for us and for the planet. Obviously, I didn’t give it too much importance because I
was young and naive. Watching the video "Can we cool the planet?" I learned more about the
condition of our planet. Climate change relates to the change as the consequence of human
actions that cause the change in the atmosphere’s composition, in addition to physical climate
variability. Human actions increase the atmospheric absorption of greenhouse gases, primarily
through the combustion of fossil fuels. These greenhouse gases trap energy in the land, causing a
rise in the planet’s temperature. The effect of the greenhouse gases also causes a rise in
temperature on the surface of our planet. This phenomenon is called global warming. The broad
increase in temperature leads to the development of different issues, such as more frequent
heating waves, shifts in weather, increase in water level, decrease in agricultural production, etc.

To cool our planet, it’s important to reduce the amount of CO2 that enters the
atmosphere. After all, CO2 is one of the main reasons why our planet is hot. I also learned that
there are many ways to reduce the amount of carbon emissions burned from fossil fuels. One
way is to use renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines. A "problem" with
renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines is that they can only work at a
specific time of the day or condition, and they’re not consistent in providing energy. For
example, solar energy doesn’t work when it’s night and wind energy doesn’t work when the
wind is not strong enough. Carbfix is a method of capturing CO2 and turning it into stone. It
works by dissolving CO2 into water and then injecting it into a rock where it will react with the
minerals present in it, creating a carbonated mineral. A possible advantage of mineral
carbonization is water capture Instead of using amine capture because it requires less energy and
can be transformed into cement, which is good for building various facilities. Direct air capture
is a method in which CO2 is sucked from the air and stored in containers. The problem is that it’s
really expensive because it requires millions of containers just to store a small percentage of
CO2. A way of avoiding the emission of CO2 is by creating a fuel that doesn’t emit too much
CO2. For example, net-zero or carbon neutral fuels. The problem then would be the price.
Compared to fossil fuels that are easier to get, those types of fuels are hard to make, and even if
they succeeded in making some, the quantity would be minimal and not enough for everyone.
Another solution to cool the planet would be geoengineering the climate. Reflecting the sunlight
to cool the planet is not a bad idea, but that’s not enough because it just prevents the earth from
receiving more heat than required. It doesn’t help our planet to dissipate the heat trapped
between the earth and the atmosphere. And even if we manage to cool down the earth, if they put
particles like sulfate aerosol out there, the problem is that when they come back to earth, we are
not sure about the effect it will have on us and around us. Planting trees is also a good idea to
stop climate change because they can absorb CO2 and convert it into oxygen. The problem is
that many factories are taking down trees to build more factories and goods, for example, paper.
The exact number of trees that are needed to absorb all the gigatons of CO2 in the air is unknown
and it’s hard to calculate. Although planting trees is one of the best solutions for climate change,
with the huge demand for food, we can’t plant trees everywhere because we need those lands for
agriculture, and when producing food, we create organic waste, which creates an oxygen-
deprived environment favorable to certain microbes, which in turn produce methane, a
greenhouse gas way more powerful and dangerous than CO2. Composting is a possible solution
to those previous problems; it helps the plants grow by turning the waste into a nutrient for the
plants, making trees and crops grow faster.

I am confident that in the future we will solve the problem caused by climate change
thanks to the efforts of many scientists and engineers. We already have the motivation and the
ideas. We just need to research more. We need more resources. We need better transportation
systems. We need solar power, wind power, waterpower, and probably nuclear power. We need
to plant more trees. We need to manage our farms better. We need direct air capture. I am sure
that we will succeed with time. Maybe not in a decade or two, but in the semicentennial.
Everything will be alright.
