Actions
1. As a student, how can you contribute in
resolving the problems that the world is facing
right now?
2. Why do science had a great impact in
resolving those particular issues?
3. In your own opinion, is it possible to solve the
current issues without the help of science?
4. Give at least 2 science inventions/
developements that could help alleviate the
problems.
5. If you were given the chance to create an
invention that could help solve the issue,
what would it be? Why?

Future Actions:
 Researchers Stephen Pacala and Robert Socolow at
Princeton University have suggested one approach that
they call "stabilization wedges".
 These wedges could hold emissions at approximately
current levels for the next 50 years, putting us on a
potential path to stabilize around 500 ppm.
 There is also the potential to capture the carbon dioxide
emitted from fossil fuels and store it underground -- a
process called "carbon sequestration."

"Science is more like a cookbook than a blueprint. It is

open for experimentation, innovation, and refinement."

Greenhouse Effect
 warming that results when the
atmosphere traps heat radiating from
Earth toward space.
Gases that contribute to the greenhouse
effect:
 water vapor
 carbon dioxide
 methane

The role of human activities
 Scientific experts concluded that there's a
more than 95% probability that human
activities over the past 50 years have
warmed our planet.
 The industrial activities that our modern
civilization depends upon have raised
atmosperic carbon dioxide levels from 280
parts per million to 400 parts per million in
the last 150 years.

Solar Irradiance
 The sun is the fundamental source of energy that
drives our climate system so it's reasonable to
assume that changes in the sun's energy output
would cause the climate to change.
 For example, if warming were caused by a more
active sun, then scientists would expect to see
warmer temperatures in all layers of the
atmosphere. Instead, they have observed a cooling
in the upper atmosphere, and a warming at the
surface and in the lower parts of the atmosphere.
