INTRODUCTION:
How to use this TOEFL guide
Hi there! I’m Yuan, the TOEFL
Director at PrepScholar.

I wrote this guide to share with you

the five TOEFL strategies we’ve seen
again and again increase students’
TOEFL scores by more than 15 points.

First, let me do a quick intro on who

we are and why we know the TOEFL…
3
We are the PrepScholar TOEFL team. We’re a team of
TOEFL experts and our mission is to make students of all
potentials reach their target TOEFL scores and get into
their dream grad programs.

We know how confusing and frustrating it feels to devote a

lot of time on a weird English test with strange topics and
ever-changing questions.

We’ve been there before. Many of us on the PrepScholar

TOEFL team are international students who have aced the
TOEFL and gotten into top-notch grad programs around
the country – programs at Harvard, MIT, Princeton,
Northwestern, Berkeley, and Michigan.

We were once standing where you are, wondering how to

conquer the TOEFL instead of being conquered.

By systematically breaking down the TOEFL and examining

our mistakes, we were able to crack the TOEFL, learn its
traps and tricks, and reach our target TOEFL score.

4
We don’t just know how to beat the TOEFL ourselves, we
know how to teach YOU to beat the TOEFL!

The TOEFL wants you to think that not everyone is cut out
to beat it. However, I know that with the right motivation
and approach, anyone can beat the TOEFL.

How do I know that YOU can beat the TOEFL? Here’s how:

I know that wherever you are in the world, you’d probably

rather be doing something else besides spending your time
reading a TOEFL guide. But here you are, sacrificing your
time and energy to do this – and that says something
about you. You have big dreams for yourself, and
mastering the TOEFL will put you a giant step closer to
realizing your ultimate dream, be it your dream
graduate program, nursing / pharmacy school, or others.

5
You have the discipline and drive to go above and beyond
in life, and I’m here to help you succeed.

We’ve already helped hundreds of students over the

years. If you are anything like them, you are craving a
step-by-step path to conquering the TOEFL. You might
be feeling confused and thinking things like:

1. I’m unsure of what to study, and how best to study.

2. I’m scared about the Speaking section because I get so
nervous and freeze under pressure.
3. I’m was never good in English and I am really slow.
4. I’m struggling to stay motivated!
5. I can’t decide how to fit TOEFL prep into my busy life.

You want to do well, but you don’t know where to start.

I get it. Many of our students have these exact problems.
When it comes to acing the TOEFL, I know what works and
more importantly, what doesn’t work.

Here is the ONE thing I know without a doubt: if you want

to ace the TOEFL, you need to study TOEFL the right way.
I’ve seen the immediate results on students’ TOEFL scores
when they tackle the TOEFL according to the five
strategies I will lay out in this guide.

If you study the TOEFL right, you are one giant step closer
to realizing your life’s dream. If you study the TOEFL
6
right, it should be the simplest part of your dream.

Read this guide and follow these strategies, and you’ll

overcome the biggest TOEFL prep problems out there.

With this guide, you’re going to make every minute count

toward getting into your dream graduate program and
toward reaching the dream life you have always wanted.

By the way, this is also why we’ve created an online TOEFL

Complete Prep Course. It’s the brainchild of our thousands
of hours of TOEFL training.

and New TOEFL question type into this course to most
effectively improve your TOEFL score. It’s the perfect

Now, let’s get started to MASTER the TOEFL together! First

up, the #1 Tip to a 15+ Point Improvement!

8
1: The Critical Factor
You get what you put in

No matter who you are, why you are taking the TOEFL, or
how you’ve learned English in the past, there is one factor,
one inevitable law of the world, that can’t be bypassed. You
need to be motivated to put in the necessary time and
effort to study. No study process in the world can make a
dent on your TOEFL score in under 20 hours.

You have to want to get a good TOEFL score yourself. This

is what I call internal motivation. Every internally
motivated student spent far more time studying and got

9
better results than students who were not internally
motivated.

So how can you be internally motivated? It’s important to

learn both the big picture and the little picture. Here’s
the big picture – the TOEFL is the gate keeping you from
getting into your dream program!

TOEFL

The fact is, you you need to hit your target TOEFL score
in order to be considered to study at your dream grad
school or work at your dream job. You probably already
know this – but I can’t emphasize this enough.

A low TOEFL score will thoroughly kill your chances. Do

NOT let a 4-hour test erase an opportunity to fulfill your
life’s ambition!

On the other hand, a high TOEFL score (usually above 100)

10
will not only get you admitted, but may get you full
scholarships! Why? Full scholarships at major universities
usually require for the grad school student to be able to
be a teaching assistant to professors and teach
undergraduate classes. You can’t do that unless you have
demonstrated a high degree of ability to clearly read,
write, speak, and listen in English. Imagine not only
getting into your dream school, but getting paid to
study there. That’s what the TOEFL can deliver for you.

Here is an example to illustrate what I know:

1. If a grad program says the average score for their
admitted students is 21 on Speaking and 90 Total.
2. You know that the absolute minimum score you can get
and expect to have a realistic chance of admission is 2
to 4 points below 90, 1 to 2 points below 2 21.
3. Even assuming your other credentials are stellar, it
would probably still be a reach school for you.
4. But if you score a 100 on TOEFL and a 26 on Speaking,
all of a sudden you may not only be considered for
admission, but for potential fellowships.

“ An hour of TOEFL studying will boost

your grad school admission chances far
more than anything else if you’ve spent

fewer than 100 hours doing TOEFL prep,
period.

11
But despite knowing how important the TOEFL is, most
students still do not spend enough time studying. Instead –
they spend time browsing Facebook and looking for
inaccurate TOEFL information from other students, or
getting nervous breakdowns after hearing someone else
scoring well on the TOEFL. They are always on your phone,
and never actually spend the time to sit down in silence
and work hard to improve.

Remember this: good grades take years of attending

classes and thousands of hours to achieve. Your other
activities like research projects and work experience also
take months to secure and more time to complete.

You are not going to change your other credentials in just

a matter of 100 hours. But studying TOEFL for 100 hours in
the right way will likely boost your score dramatically.
This will often double or triple your odds of being
admitted to your dream program.

Again, the key is that you have to study for the TOEFL
the right way. That’s exactly what our Complete TOEFL
Prep Course is designed to do. 100 hours of studying
poorly won’t raise your score, but 100 hours using proven
techniques and strategies definitely will.

So for big picture motivation, here’s what I want you to

do: think about why you need to take the TOEFL, and
imagine the best outcome from getting a great TOEFL
12
score. Imagine TOEFL setting the stage for you to achieve
your dream career in life.

Now that we’ve got the big picture in place, we need to

work on the little picture. Studying for the TOEFL can still
be boring, and it’s easy to lose motivation when you
actually start studying. It’s too easy to go on Facebook, go
on WhatsApp, and watch YouTube videos with your mind
wondering off to somewhere else…

TOEFL

To crack the secret to motivation, I’ve studied dozens of

psychological research projects and worked with hundreds
of students. By far, here’s the single concept that has
worked over and over again:

“ Break up all of TOEFL prep into small,

clear-cut goals, and give yourself
rewards for meeting those goals.

We humans are most motivated when we accomplish small
tasks and receive rewards or self-satisfaction when we

13
accomplish these tasks.

This principle has worked for every difficult goal in my

own life, and it will work for you, too.

People on diets fail to lose weight if they see the goal as a

giant task of losing 30 kg. It’s just too big a task. However,
if they break up the giant goal into small, manageable
goals – just eat fewer calories one day, then two days,
then one week – dieters suddenly have a plan they can
stick to. With each pound lost, dieters see the results, and
they feel motivated to keep going.

TOEFL prep works exactly the same way. You need to

break up the giant TOEFL test into small, manageable
parts. You need to see that putting in time really does
raise your score. Then you’ll build a habit of studying for
the TOEFL because of your internal motivation.

We designed our TOEFL Complete Prep Course around this

successful strategy. PrepScholar breaks up the giant task
of TOEFL prep into small learning goals, through over 50
different skill-based lessons and quizzes across the 4
TOEFL sections. The program gives you 1:1 feedback on
how to improve and where you should focus to study.

I’ve also found that students often need someone to help

14
them schedule their study sessions and to hold them
responsible for actually studying. This is why PrepScholar
will check in weekly and prompt you to schedule actual
study sessions. We’ll send you reminders and track each
time you come in. We’ll also send weekly reports to you so
you know you’re on track.

Students who use PrepScholar have said over and over that
it’s the best TOEFL system they’ve ever used because they
no longer have to worry about what to do, when to do
it, and how. PrepScholar takes care of all of that. Instead,
students can focus on what’s really important: learning
how to tackle the TOEFL and get more points. Some have
even said studying with PrepScholar is addictive!

If you want to learn more about

how our all-in-one TOEFL program
works, just visit us HERE! Or email
me: toefl@prepscholar.com
I personally answer every email and
I’d love to hear from you!
We’ve just covered a huge issue: motivation. Now we
actually have to learn how to prep for the TOEFL. Read on
to learn our Tip #2: Make Your Practice Genuine!
15
2: Don’t Trust Imitators
Make your practice genuine

You can spend all the time in the world prepping for the
TOEFL, but if you don’t do it in the right way, you’re not
going to make any progress.

Even worse, you can lower your score. By reading this

guide, you’ll have a huge advantage over students who
don’t. From here on, we’re going to discuss the major
strategies to study effectively for the TOEFL.

The TOEFL is a special test. It’s purposely designed to

trick non-native English speakers with weird words and
16
strange topics. You need to learn the way TOEFL tricks you
and understand how TOEFL set out traps to make you fall.

Why in the world would the ETS do this? To understand

this, we have to realize that the TOEFL is basically an
entrance exam to all graduate programs and professional
careers in an English-speaking country for every person
who did NOT grow up in an English-speaking country.

Graduate programs and professional careers in the United

States and other countries use the TOEFL to compare
students who went to very different colleges and are now
pursuing very different life paths. If your TOEFL score is
higher than another applicant’s, you will have a better
shot at getting in. If your TOEFL score isn’t high enough to
the schools’ standards, you’re not getting in. End of story.

The TOEFL gives grad schools what they

want by making the test tricky for most
non-native English speakers across all
disciplines!

You need to demonstrate that you can not only speak

English fluently, but that you can express complex
opinions and understand weird academic topics in English.
This is not easy to accomplish.

17
At PrepScholar, we take the TOEFL multiple times a year
and our Complete TOEFL Prep contains practice questions
that are continuously updated. We are constantly
identifying and finding the most recent TOEFL question
types and teaching it to you.

“ Practice only with only recently updated

TOEFL practice questions that reflect the
newly added question formats.

The TOEFL has a very specific style. Questions and answers
are written in a very specific way. This style is consistent
across every single TOEFL test. By practicing with realistic
TOEFL questions and learning to expect and ace every
possible question type, you’ll understand all the ways the
TOEFL tries to trick you and avoid being tricked.

Unfortunately, most TOEFL practice questions out there

are really bad for learning how to do the TOEFL. These
prep books are typically written by people who have
mediocre TOEFL scores and outdated TPOs that are no
longer tested on today’s TOEFL test. The authors often
haven’t actually scored well on the TOEFL themselves, the
questions they write don’t actually reflect what’s on the
real TOEFL, and there are many question types completely
missing from their course material.

Textbook publishers want to cut costs and quality, so they

18
rely on their brand name to sell copies without actually
caring about educating the student.

Imagine that you wanted to join a soccer team. Instead of

practicing with soccer balls, you decided to train using a
balloon ball, and you got really, really good at kicking the
balloon. You understood how it moves and how to hit it in
just the right way. Come game day, the team uses a soccer
ball to play and it’s a total surprise. You kick and the
soccer ball behaves differently. TOEFL prep works the
same way! Practicing on poorly adapted, outdated
questions will train you for the totally wrong thing.

“ By training with PrepScholar, you’ll be

training with real soccer balls instead of
balloons!

This is why PrepScholar’s Complete TOEFL Prep uses two
sources to allow you to learn the real TOEFL. First, we
incorporate online, fully simulated TOEFL practice under
the same experience, time pressure, and question
format as you would see on the real TOEFL iBT.

Secondly, for even more practice, I’ve hired the best

TOEFL experts in the country to craft THOUSANDS of the
most realistic TOEFL questions for you to answer, and we’ll
provide individual, one-on-one feedback on your answers,
and how you could improve to not make the same
mistakes again! This is a super critical difference between
19
PrepScholar and every other TOEFL course: we give you
genuine, realistic practice, and more than that, we give
you personalized feedback so you don’t mindlessly spend
hours practicing, you actually learn and grow.

Our TOEFL experts have scored in the top 1% of all

students on the TOEFL, have graduated from top
graduate programs like Harvard and MIT, and have earned
multiple teaching awards. They know the TOEFL inside and
out, and continuously-updated questions they write are
better than anything else out there (aside from the official
TOEFL practice tests).

To learn more details about how PrepScholar trains you

with the most realistic TOEFL questions, visit
https://www.prepscholar.com/toefl/s/

Now that we know what kinds of questions you need to

use, we need to cover how you’ll actually be using them.
Keep reading to learn more.

P.S. If you’re finding this guide helpful, please share it

with your friends, classmates, colleagues, and other
students! I want it in the hands of as many people as
possible – the more students know this, the better!

20
3: Focused Practice
Practice your specific skills.

It’s true that PrepScholar has thousands of realistic and

updated TOEFL practice questions, but these would be
ineffective without the right organization. You have to
study the right questions, at the right time, in the right
order, to get the highest point improvement possible. You
can do this on your own. But it is a lot of work and you
have to make sure you do it right.

Our Complete TOEFL Prep Course actually does all of

this for you automatically, so you don’t even have to
think about it. I’ll explain why this is important.

21
To do well on the TOEFL, you need to learn nearly 50
separate skills. There are four sections – Reading,
Listening, Speaking, Writing, and each is made up of
multiple sub-skills:
• Within Reading, you need to know 10 different skills
from vocabularies to understanding inferences, etc.
• Within Listening, you need to know how to listen for
Main Topic, Facts and Details, Organization, and
Purpose, etc.
• Within Speaking, there are 6 different question types
and each requires a different approach.
• Within Writing, there are 2 prompts with very
different strategies to tackle.

“ If you ignore these skill distinctions and

do not learn them individually, you
waste 90% of your time.

Most students who study for the TOEFL have an approach
so broad that it becomes completely ineffective. They say,
“I need to improve my Speaking score,” or “I need to get
better on Reading.” Because they think it’s an overall
weakness, they spend hours doing TPOs. When they fail to
improve their score, it’s no surprise to me. They’re not
focusing on training their specific weaknesses!

Let’s imagine that you’re trying to learn to swim. There

are four major strokes you want to learn: freestyle,
backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. For some reason,
22
you think that trying to learn all four at once is the best
way to start. So you jump in the pool and start swimming.
You first face the water and complete one stroke of
freestyle. Then you flip onto your back and complete one
stroke of backstroke. You flip back onto your stomach and
try breaststroke. And so you continue, thrashing through
the water in a fury, while spectators look on bewildered.

Cleary this is ridiculous. Anyone who’s learned to swim

would know that you’d never learn swimming this way!
You need to focus on one stroke, one movement, one
weakness and make it great, then move on to tackle the
next thing. That is how Michael Phelps learned to become
the world’s best swimmer, and that is how you will
master the TOEFL.

To get better at the Speaking section, you need to get

focused practice on each individual question. To get
better at Listening, you need to figure out exactly where
you are weak and how to improve the weakness. To get
better at understanding the Big Picture of Reading, you
need to understanding how to summarize conclusions that
are not clearly stated within the Reading passage!

“ By focusing on individual skills and

mastering them, you will master the
TOEFL as a whole.

This is exactly how PrepScholar works. When you start ” 23

with PrepScholar, you’ll take a diagnostic that will
determine your weaknesses. PrepScholar then creates a
study program specifically customized for you. To improve
each skill, you’ll have focused lessons dedicated to each
skill, with many practice questions assigned to each skill.
This will train you for all the questions that will ever
appear on the TOEFL for this skill

There’s no other prep system out there that does it this

way. Doing a random TPO practice test, then random
reading, then watch a few random videos is just like
switching between swimming strokes in the pool. You
won’t make good progress this way.

To see how exactly PrepScholar focuses you on improving

specific skills, see how PrepScholar works or email me at
TOEFL@PrepScholar.com with ANY question even if it’s not
directly related to our course.

I hope all of this is making a lot of sense to you. I’ve heard

from so many students that learning these strategies and
using PrepScholar have completely changed their
perspective on how to prep for the TOEFL. It seems so
obvious after you hear it that you wonder why everyone
doesn’t know these facts.

But after all, this is what the ETS wants – they want

24
people to prep for the TOEFL in the wrong way so that
people do poorly and have to take it over and over again
to get the scores grad programs want. But by reading this
guide, you are now be ahead of most students.

Keep on reading to learn even more!

25
4: Master Your Mistakes
You get what you put in

So far we’ve learned that effective TOEFL prep is built on

three things:
1. Being motivated to study the TOEFL
2. Studying with realistic and updated TOEFL questions
3. Studying TOEFL in a focused way.

This is exactly how PrepScholar will work for you when

you start. And yet, this still isn’t enough:
• Students fall into the trap of focusing too much on
quantity, and not enough on quality.
• They blaze through hundreds of practice questions,
26
getting a false sense of confidence. After all, they’ve seen
hundreds of questions, so how can they NOT have
mastered the TOEFL? They’re ignoring this critical rule:

“ For every single question you get wrong,

you MUST understand WHY you got it

wrong, and you MUST know how to avoid
this mistake in the future.

Simply doing questions isn’t enough. When you miss a

question, you miss it for a reason. You either:
• Didn’t know the material, or…
• Made a mistake in your work, or…
• Made a careless mistake.
If you don’t figure this out, you’re going to make the same
mistake again.

Let’s use another analogy. You’re trying to learn to play

the guitar so you can write a song. You try playing the
guitar based on what you’ve seen on YouTube. You get a
little better – you can play a few chords – but you just
can’t write and play an original song. The guitar feels
heavy, you play the wrong notes, and you are adding
random words to a bad tune. And you don’t know how to
get better.

Now imagine Bob Dylan and John Lennon are both standing
by your side. You play a chord, and Bob Dylan tells you
27
exactly what you need to improve. You write a verse, and
John Lennon tells you exactly how to improve it. They
tell you, step-by-step, what you are doing wrong and what
you are doing right. Putting all this into place, you end up
playing a song better than you did after 100 hours of
aimless practice. Then, after just another 20 hours of
coaching and practice, you’re already way better. You
know now exactly what to avoid in the future, what to
focus on, and thanks to under

Then, after just 20 more tries with expert feedback,

you’re already way better. You know now exactly what to
avoid in the future, thanks to understanding what
mistakes you were making.

Again, the TOEFL works exactly the same way! You have
the choice of blazing through 100 practice questions and
feeling good without improving. OR, you can focus on
why you’re missing each specific question, and after
just 20 questions you’ll already have mastered your
mistakes. This is how you’ll get better with PrepScholar.

“ PrepScholar gives a detailed, one-on-one

explanation for every question and

builds in review into every single lesson.

When you use PrepScholar, you’ll not only complete high-

quality questions that are focused on specific skills. You’ll

28
also review every single question that you missed and
learn what mistakes you made.

You are probably missing all the Speaking questions

because of a few mistakes you are making over and over
again. You are probably missing all the Reading and
Listening questions because you are particularly weak on
certain types of questions. But you can’t improve if you
don’t know what they are. PrepScholar keep track of
every single question you missed, and help you identify
and focus on improving your exact TOEFL weaknesses.

That’s the advantage of building our own custom

technology – we create what’s most useful for you
because we’ve mastered the TOEFL prep process
ourselves.

29
5: Customize to Yourself
Ignore one-size-fits-all

All of this is a lot to take in. You’ve probably already

significantly changed how you think about the TOEFL,
from understanding the importance of motivation to doing
the right types of questions, in the right way. Don’t worry,
PrepScholar is going to handle all of it so you can stop
worrying on what to learn and focus on actually learning.

The final strategy I have for you is the final pillar that will
tie all of this together. It hinges on the idea that you are a
truly unique person. And I don’t mean this in the way that

30
your second grade teacher meant it. I mean this:

“ You have different strengths and

weaknesses from other students. You have
different goals. This means you need to

prep in a way that’s customized to you.

Just think about yourself compared to other students at

your school. You might have learned English since you
were young but never learned to speak English. You might
have learned English in high school, or college. Every
student is different. In fact, no two students have the
exact same skills as you. Every student needs a unique
TOEFL study plan.

But here’s the problem: besides PrepScholar, nearly every

other TOEFL course out there treats students exactly the
same. Books give the same strategies and lessons to every
reader and expect students to read the book cover-to-
cover in the same way. Expensive classes from big-name
companies drag everyone through the same lectures.

Let’s put aside the fact that they hire inexperienced

English teachers fresh out of college without any teaching
experience. How can the same teaching apply work for
students from India, Turkey, China, Bangladesh, and Iran
with vastly different native languages?
31
See which of the following apply to you:

1. You feel you’re stronger in some TOEFL skills, but

you’re pretty nervous about other skills.
✓ You need to prep in a way that reflects your
unique abilities.
1. You’re aiming for a specific score target.
✓ You need to prep differently from someone aiming
for a higher or lower score. You need to use
different strategies.
2. You have a busy schedule and need a way to fit prep
into your schedule.
✓ You need prep that adapts to your time availability
and helps you commit time to your study plan.

With PrepScholar, you’ll be able to address all of the

issues above. We completely customize the study program
for your abilities, so that you’re always working on what’s
most effective for you. We even give you different
strategies depending on what your score target is.

There you have it – my top 5 strategies designed to get

you 15+ points on the TOEFL.

Now it’s your turn to apply these 5

tips and CRUSH the TOEFL!
