How To Get Paid 10 Times More

Than Other Teachers!
COVID-19 has changed the way we live. It’s affected how we communicate, how we spend
time with our loved ones, how we work and how we travel.
It also encouraged us to seek out new opportunities.

When the pandemic struck, only a few people were working or studying online, the majority
of us were traveling to work every day.
Almost overnight, the entire world moved online, leaving many people with little choice but
to embrace new technology for the first time.

Now there are thousands of people teaching English to international students from the
comfort of their home via the internet, and you could be one of them!

Online learning is just so convenient. Both teachers and students can set their times and have
classes when and where it suits them, and no time is wasted traveling to and from classes.

Students can learn one-on-one or in a small group at a fraction of the cost of a comparative
face-to-face class. And teachers save time on preparation!

If you’re convinced and ready to kick-start your online teaching journey, this guide will give
you all the necessary knowledge to land your first teaching job in a matter of days!
Why Teach English Online?
10 Awesome Reasons!
Has anyone ever asked you why you want to teach English online? If you need help
answering this question, we’ve got you covered.

Why teach English online?

First things first, there’s an exploding demand for fluent or native English-speaking teachers
around the world, which equals lots of online teaching opportunities!

There’s probably never been a better time than right now to teach English online.
If you fit the bill (most employers ask that you are TEFL certified and hold a bachelor’s degree
in any field), you’ll be teaching English lessons from the comfort of your home to students all
across the world!

If you’re still trying to figure out if you should teach English online check out these
benefits:

1. Earn good money - As an online English teacher, you can make really good money!
Expect to earn around $15-26 USD an hour teaching English online! Some online
teaching platforms also offer great perks and incentives for joining. You have the
opportunity of working as many or as few hours as you want. How much money you
make depends on you!

2. Enjoy complete flexibility - Get full control of your schedule. Teaching English
online is great for anyone looking for the freedom to set their own working hours and
enjoy flexibility. Part-time, full-time whatever floats your boat.

3. Work from home (or from anywhere really!) -You can teach virtually anywhere
and anytime. And you’re not necessarily tied to your home, either – anywhere quiet
with a decent internet connection will do!
4. Gain valuable ESL teaching experience - Trying to break into the ESL industry
abroad and build up your English teaching experience for your resume? Teaching
English language learners online could be the perfect jumping-off point for you.

5. Work in your pajamas - Well, from the waist down, at least! Enough said on that
particular perk of teaching English online – who doesn’t love stretchy pants?!

6. Getting started is easy - All you need to qualify for most jobs is a TEFL certificate.
No prior teaching experience needed!

7. Meet people from different cultures - How cool is it to be able to talk to people from
all over the world? You can build strong relationships with your learners and learn
more about different cultures through them.

8. Opens doors for you in the future - Teaching English opens doors and it looks
awesome on your resume! Future employers will see your experience as invaluable.

9. Be your own boss - You’ll become an independent contractor or freelancer who has
the freedom to pick and choose when to work and how much you’ll earn—the ball is
in your court.

10. Ditch the 9-5 job - Sometimes working a 9-5 job can be a soul-crushing experience.
Teaching online allows you the freedom to work on your own terms. No boss to
criticize your work or micromanage you either.
5 Reasons Why You Should Get
TEFL Certified Now!
The ability to speak English at a fluent level is valuable skill because it allows companies to
easily communicate and trade with one another. Plus, it helps individuals find work and
progress in their careers. This means skilled English (English as a Second Language)

But simply being a native or fluent English speaker is not enough. As demand for qualified
TEFL instructors has increased, so have the expectations of many language learners.

The Setup & Preparation
Just as any job, teaching English online also requires you to have a few tools at your disposal.
The minimal requirement you need to get started is:

 Laptop
 Stable Internet connection (wired connection preferred)
 Headset for audio capture. Integrated laptop microphones work fine but you can
improve audio quality by connecting a headset or connecting a headset with a
microphone or webcam with an integrated microphone.
 Webcam for video capture (optional). Integrated webcams work fine but you can
also use a third-party version.

This list may expand due to different company or teaching platform requirements. For
example, you can expect to be asked to wear a shirt of a specific color for your classes, or
possibly include the company logo in your background!

Here is an example of what you can do.

Watch the video below to learn more about setup for your online classes
below:

Quick tips!

 If you have a chance, we would also strongly advise you to invest in a Dry Erase
Board. This handy tool can be used with adults and children to illustrate concepts,
spell out words, reward students, or pretty much anything else!

 Some companies might also ask you to use a big headset

instead of small wireless one. You can see an example in a
picture below.
How To Make Your Teaching Resume
Stand Out & Get Hired
As competition for online teaching jobs heats up, it is more critical now than ever to have a
great resume/CV that is designed specifically for online teaching jobs. There is little point in
submitting an ‘all-purpose’ resume or CV. Because they are unlikely to get read!

The most important thing to keep in mind while writing your resume is what companies
are looking for.

There is some variation in what companies look for depending on what they are teaching
and where they are based. The main variations will be if they want native or fluent speakers,
degrees, and specific teaching experience (example: teaching business English, Teaching
Young Learners, etc).

For the larger China-based companies they will often operate off a checklist something
like this:

 Native speaker
 Degree
 120-hour TEFL certificate
 Good Internet connection
 Experience

If you are a non-native speaker,

Make sure to include any educational certificates like TEFL/TESOL that can serve as proof of
your ability to teach English.

Quick tip!
When writing a resume for teaching English online you should make sure that this kind of
information goes to the front and center, and not buried on the last page.
9 Important Things To Include
When Creating An Online Teaching Resume:

 Only add relevant teaching experience. Recruiters do not want to be reading about a
sales position you held 5 years ago!

 Add a photo. Asia-based schools like this. It’s common in Asian countries to include a

photo on a resume.

 Add a link to your introduction video. A 1-minute introduction video is important

when applying. We will cover more on this in the following pages.

 Make sure your TEFL and degree are clearly visible on the first page. Many employers
will contact the organization you have completed your TEFL training with to make

sure your certificate is legitimate.

 Contact information should go at the start.

 Reduce the word count. A good resume should be no more than two pages and well
laid out. A simple online teaching resume can be just one page.

 Recruiters often won’t read a wall of text

 Use clean modern formatting. Times New Roman text makes it look like you wrote it
in 5 minutes! Use Ariel, Trebuchet MS, or Verdana. Just pick one and stay with it

through the whole resume. Black text on a white background is easy to read. Dark

Grey on Light Grey is not! Bold headings and subheadings so the information can be

found easily.

 Include a link to your teaching video if you have one!

How To Sell Yourself Through
Introduction Video
Have you ever wondered how these online companies hire people often without even really
conducting a live interview? Nowadays, when you apply to an online language company, you
may be asked to introduce yourself through a self-recorded video.

This recording, which usually runs for not more than two minutes, is a quicker way of
showcasing your qualifications, skills, and even your personality to your potential employer.

We included a video sample for you below that will help you learn how to stand out
among a multitude of teacher applications!

Take note that there are some companies who will not require an intro video from you
during the application process. However, you may still need it to upload to your teacher
profile when you begin teaching online.

What To Include In Your
Introduction Video

A BRIEF SELF-INTRODUCTION

This should include your name, your nationality, and where you come from. You can also
mention the languages you speak.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Obviously, you don’t need to say all the jobs listed in your resume. Highlight the most
important teaching or education-related experience in a couple of sentences, mentioning
where and which types of students you have taught.

YOUR EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

Provide a brief answer to the question, “Why do you love teaching English?”

Got a teaching or learning philosophy? Feel free to share it, too!

Talk about your teaching style. Give your prospective learners an idea of what your online
classes would be like. You can also say, or even show, some of the materials/resources you
will use during your classes.

A CALL TO ACTION

If this video is for an interviewer, tell them you look forward to speaking with them soon. If
it is for your online teacher profile, invite your potential students (or their parents) to book
classes with you! You can mention why they should book your lessons, or simply end with,
“I hope to see you soon in my class!”

Quick tip!

If you are just beginning your teaching career and don't have any experience to mention in
your introduction video, then focus on your story and on why and how you got into teaching!
Keep your video brief, professional and energetic!
How To Nail Your Demo Class
First of all, what is a demo class you might ask?

Well, it’s exactly what it says on the tin. You’ll be expected to host a demonstration lesson,
it’ll be like-for-like how you’d teach online if you were to land the job. Please note that it
won’t be a class with real students, you will be acting like it is your class on the video call to
show your skills to the employer. For example, you’ll use their platform if they have one, if
not it’ll be hosted on some video conferencing software that they recommend, they’ll
provide you with any materials that you need and you’ll be expected to prepare your lesson
beforehand – just like any normal lesson.

Your online employer will always tell you the length of the lesson, the level and age of the
students, and any other important information in advance so you can be as prepared as
possible. Teaching demos can range from 5 minutes to 25 minutes.

What employer wants to see?

Your potential employer will be looking out for any number of specific criteria. From your
facial expressions and what you’re wearing, to how you’ve prepared for your lesson, your
classroom management skills, teaching techniques, and how you communicate with your
students. It’s time to put your TEFL training to good use!

CHAPTER 2

Time To Apply!
Now when you have your setup ready, your CV written, introduction video recorded and
you know how to prepare for the demo class. It's time to go out there and get the job you
want!

There are basically two categories when it comes to how to teach English online. Which one
you choose depends on your goals, your preferences, and your level of commitment.

1. You can work with an established online tutoring companies & marketplace

2. You can work for yourself (start your own business)

In this part of the guide, we will carefully look into these options, and help you find the best
one for you!

Let's start!
4 Benefits Of Online English
Teaching Companies
Most new online English teachers start out working with a company, and there are a lot of
benefits to this.

1. Support - If you’re new to teaching English online, working with a company usually
offers some support, such as training and tutorials, on-boarding, and even a mentor
or professional development opportunities in some cases.
2. Students provided - When you work with a company, you are not responsible for
finding students; the company has a bank of students already, and they’ll either be
assigned to you or you will select students based on your availability.
3. Materials provided – Another benefit of working with a company is that you won’t
have to come up with lesson plans and teaching materials, as these are provided for
you.
4. No marketing required - Unlike working for yourself, either via a teacher
marketplace or when running your own business, when you work with a company,
you won’t have to create a teacher profile, an intro video, or a website to attract
students, as they are provided for you.

Of course, there are downsides to working with a company, as well.

Salary limits -online teaching companies usually offer a range of pay to their tutors (based
on qualifications and experience) and also the chance to earn more through performance-
based bonuses; however, there is always an upper limit to how much you can earn per
hour.

Less freedom -When working with a company, you’ll likely have to work within certain
hours, you may have to wear a uniform, and lessons are usually pre-made and very
structured. While having structured lessons provided falls into the “pro” category for many
teachers, others prefer to have more room for creativity.

Work For Yourself By
Starting Your Own Tutoring Business
If you are entrepreneurial inclined, you can take this career even further! Your second choice
is to work entirely for yourself as an independent English tutor. You can set up a website that
features you and your services as a business.

Operating as a company is a good option if you want to focus on tutoring specific industry
personnel or high-level executives that want to improve their English pronunciation.

Having your own website with a unique company name and service description will help you
reach out and connect with exclusive clients that are not likely to join an online platform.

Here are a few tools to get started:

Squarespace, to create your website and avoid the learning curve of WordPress.

Off2Class, a one-stop-shop for ESL materials with 800+ ready-to-teach lessons, placement
tests, homework assignments, and student management tools.

Calendly, a scheduler that makes it easy to manage your calendar of students.

Pros
If you go this route, the sky’s the limit both in terms of income potential and how you teach
your classes, including the structure and schedule. Start-up costs are manageable - the
quality of your Internet connection matters far more than the quality of your computer, and

for midnight zoom calls!

Chile is one of the world’s longest countries measured from North to South. This means it
hosts a wide variety of geographical and climatic conditions. In the North there are deserts,
to the East there are the Andes mountains, and there are forests to the South. Travelers and
hikers will find a breathtaking range of environments to experience.

LGBTQ+ bars and clubs.
On the downside, teaching salaries in Spain are somewhat lower than in many other places
in Asia or South America. The reason is that Spain already has many English teachers.
However, Spain is more affordable than most other Western European nations, as you still
get all the conveniences of a modern first-world country.

Since the start of the global pandemic, teaching in China has become harder with their

English teachers.

The UAE takes a different approach to hire teachers than most other nations.
They prefer to get the cream of the crop, and they pay extra for it.

English teachers in many schools in Dubai, for example, must have several years of teaching
experience. They also must possess formal teaching credentials.

Teaching in the UAE is often a good idea for experienced English teachers in the United States
who want to get out of the country. Because most US teachers already have credentials, it is
easier for them to obtain a job here.

Teachers who only have a Bachelor’s degree are at somewhat of a disadvantage. However, if
you have already spent several years teaching abroad, it will also make it easier to get a job
in the UAE.

In any case, teaching in UAE is usually mid to late-career move, since it requires significant
experience and credentials.
