LANGUAGE NOTE:
Use the verb be for the following: location, clasification, place of origin, definition, weather, time, age,
or other description.
Subject Pronouns
LANGUAGE NOTES:
1. The subject pronouns are I, you, we, they, he, she, and it.
2. subject pronouns can take the place of the subject noun.

EXERCISE 2 Fill in the blanks with the correct form of be. Make a
contraction whenever possible. Not every sentence can have a
contraction.

2. Word order = subject + be + preposition + place.

2. Only that + is can form a contraction in writing: that´s.

3. Use this, that, these, or those alone or with a noün following it:
Those are my friends.
Those friends are funny.
EXERCISE 1 Read each sentence. Then identify whether the subject of the
sentence is singular or plural.
Example: Do you like this hat? _______singular______
EXERCISE 2 Read each sentence. Then identify whether the subject of the
sentence is near orfar from the speaker.
EXERCISE fill in the blanks with this, that, these, or those and the appropriate form
of be to complete the sentence. The arrows will tell you if the object or person is near
or far.
Examples: This is________ my bag.
Those are_____ my shoes.
LANGUAGE NOTE:
There is only one contraction of I am not. There are two negative contractions for all other
combinations, Study the negative contractions.
EXERCISE 1 Fill in the blanks with a pronoun and a negative verb. Practice
using both negative forms.

1. To ask a yes / no question with the verb be, put a form of be before the subject.
2. We don´t use a contraction for a short yes answer:
Yes, it is. | not: Yes, it ´s.|
3. We usually use a contraction for a short no answer.
No, it isn´t. or No, it´s not.
EXERCISE 2 Write questions with the words given. Then write a short answer:
