Congratulations Dear,
Your Aunt
If you're craving a slower-paced Bali, without the crowds, traffic, and tourist touts, the
Nusa Islands are where you'll find it. The most popular of the three islands is Nusa
Lembongan, about 20 kilometers offshore from Sanur and easily accessible by speedboat.
Surfing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and paddle boarding are the main activities here, and
the top attractions include beautiful Dream Beach; Mushroom Bay; and the Devil's Tears
rock outcrop, with views of crashing surf erupting over the rocks. Many locals still make
their living from seaweed farming, and you can watch them harvesting it by the shore.
The neighboring island, Nusa Ceningan, lies just over a bridge from Nusa Lembongan,
with a beautiful blue lagoon, and the largest of the island trio, Nusa Penida, is a quick boat
ride away. Rock formations, caves, and a bird sanctuary are Nusa Penida's top draws, and
diving is one of the most popular things to do here, with the chance to see manta rays,
sunfish, and turtles. Accommodation on the islands ranges from rustic huts to luxury villas.

Meanwhile James Simpson was intrigued by the problem of pain in surgery. By 1846,
surgeons had begun using ether as an anesthetic. In January 1847, Simpson used ether
himself during a difficult delivery and he became an enthusiastic proponent of anesthetic.
However ether was not perfect and Simpson looked for an alternative. In November 1847, he
tried inhaling chloroform and it knocked him unconscious. James Simpson then tried it on a
patient. It was a great success. The use of chloroform made childbirth much less painful for
women. Chloroform made James Simpson famous. Afterwards, he made other innovations in
obstetrics. In 1850, Simpson was elected president of the Royal College of Surgeons in
Edinburgh. Later, in 1866, in recognition of his great achievements James Simpson was made
a baronet.
James Simpson was a devout member of the Free Church of Scotland. Simpson
married his cousin Jessie on 26 December 1839. They had 9 children. James Simpson died on
6 May 1870. He was buried in Edinburgh.

Once upon a time, there was a kind woman who had no children, longed for a baby
and would often say, “How I would love to have a baby girl, even a tiny little one." A
beautiful fairy heard her wish one day, and gave her a little seed to plant in a flowerpot.
When the seed bloomed into a tulip, the woman saw a tiny, beautiful girl inside, no bigger
than her thumb. She decided to call her Thumbelina. She was so small that she had a walnut
shell for a bed and used petals as a blanket. Then, an ugly toad fell in love with Thumbelina.
One night when she was sleeping, he carried her off to his lily pad in a pond. Thumbelina
was very unhappy. A swallow was passing by and saw how sad she looked, and said, “Come
south with me to warmer lands." Young Thumbelina flew away on the swallow’s back. They
flew across the seas and came to a land of sunshine. The swallow said, " This is my home.
You can live in one of the loveliest and biggest flowers." When Thumbelina stepped inside,
she found a handsome fairy, as tiny as her, in its heart. He was the son of the king of flowers
and he fell in love with Thumbelina. He asked her to marry him. So Thumbelina became
queen of the flowers and the two lived happily ever after.

The Sumatran Elephant shares an environment with several other endangered species,
including the Sumatran Rhino, Tiger, and Orangutan. Sumatran Elephants play a vital part in
maintaining ecosystems, as they feed on a variety of plants and deposit the seeds as they
travel. Herds can be found in the the broadleaf, moist tropical forests of Borneo and Sumatra.
After half its population was lost in one generation, the Sumatran Elephant's status
was changed from "endangered" to "critically endangered" in 2012. Rapid human
development has lead to the deforestation of the Sumatran Elephant's home. Because humans
are quickly encroaching on this land, there has been much human-elephant contact, often
