London Calling: Kings, Queens, and Big Ben

4 Intermediate

Emily and Grandpa Gus are off on another adventure! This time they're visiting
London.

Your tutor will read each sentence in the story. Repeat after them and ask questions if
you're unsure about anything. Make sure that you understand the Key Words!
Exercise 1
Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament

Emily and Grandpa Gus are walking towards Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Hey Grandpa, look at that big clock tower! Isn't it amazing?

Emily

That's the Elizabeth Tower, Emily. People often call it Big Ben, but that's
actually the name of the largest bell inside the tower.
Gus

I see! And what's that big building next to it?

Emily

That's the Houses of Parliament. It's where the leaders of the United
Kingdom meet to discuss what's best for the country.
Gus
It's such a beautiful building! There must be a lot of politicians in there.

Emily

Yup! It has more than 1,000 rooms inside.

Gus

Wow, imagine tidying that up every day!

Emily

Exercise 2
Buckingham Palace
Emily and Grandpa Gus make Buckingham Palace their next stop.

This is Buckingham Palace, Emily. It is where the kings and queens of

the UK have lived for hundreds of years!
Gus

Wow, real kings and queens? Do they have a throne inside as well?

Emily

Of course! It's in the "Throne Room," which is used for very important
events.
Gus

I wish we could get past that fence and see what it's like in there. But
those guards... are they real? They look like statues to me!
Emily

Oh, they're very real! It's their job to stand there like that and keep the
palace safe. Let's get closer for a better look, though!

Exercise 3
The London Eye

Emily and Grandpa Gus have stopped to take a look at the London Eye.

Wow Grandpa, check out that Ferris wheel! It's huuuge!

Emily
That's the London Eye, Emily. It used to be the biggest Ferris wheel in
the world when it opened back in 2000. Now, there are a few even
Gus bigger than it!

No way! Can we go for a ride? London must look amazing from up

there!
Emily

Of course. But are you sure you want to? Just look at how high it goes!

Gus

Absolutely! I'm not scared — I'm excited! Let's see if we can spot our
hotel from the top!

Exercise 4
Tower Bridge
Next, Emily and Grandpa Gus go to see Tower Bridge.

Hey, Grandpa, is that a castle on the water? Does a princess live there?

Emily

Oh, that's not a castle, Emily. It just looks like one! That's actually Tower
Bridge — a very famous bridge in London that's over 120 years old!
Gus

Really? Huh... it looks very unusual!

Emily

It sure does! And the middle part of the bridge can open up to let all
sorts of boats go through. About 1,000 travel under the bridge every
Gus year!

Oh, so it's like a big, metal door, but for boats! Let's wait here for a bit
and see if it'll open up for that boat over there!

3. What are your favorite kinds of theme park rides?
