Beijing Highlights: The Great Wall and

Pandas!
4 Intermediate

For their next adventure, Emily and Grandpa Gus have traveled to China's capital —
Beijing.
Your tutor will read each sentence in the story. Repeat after them and ask questions if
you're unsure about anything. Make sure that you understand the Key Words!

Exercise 1
The Forbidden City

The first place they're out to explore is the Forbidden City.

Welcome to the Forbidden City, Emily — the home of Chinese emperors

for hundreds of years!
Gus

This whole place for just one emperor?

Emily
Well, the emperor, his family, and their many servants. No one else was
allowed inside!
Gus

Just look at the size of this place! I'm sure they needed thousands of
people to take care of it!
Emily

Yep! It was like a city within a city. It had its own gardens, temples, and
even a market. The emperor had everything he needed right here. And
Gus guess what? There are almost 9,000 rooms inside!

Woah, that's crazy! It must have been like living in a maze!

Exercise 2
The Great Wall of China
Next, Emily and Grandpa Gus go to see the Great Wall of China.

This wall looks like it goes on forever, Grandpa. There's no end to it!

Emily

Well, it is the longest wall on Earth! It goes over mountains, hills, and
even across rivers. It's no wonder it took thousands of years to build!
Gus

Amazing! But why did they build it in the first place?

Emily

To keep their land safe from their enemies! And do you know what they
used? Bricks and stones, of course, but also — sticky rice!
Gus

Rice? You mean like the rice we just had for lunch?

Emily

Exactly! They used it to make bricks stick together better. And the wall
is still standing!
Gus

Wow! That's some strong rice!

Emily

Exercise 3
The Panda House
Emily and Grandpa Gus are at the Panda House at Beijing Zoo.

Pandas are so cute, aren't they, Grandpa? They just sit around and eat
bamboo all day long! What a life!
Emily

I know! And they can eat a lot of it too — nearly 40 kilograms a day!
That's more than what you weigh!
Gus

Wow, that's a lot of bamboo! Do they do anything else, besides eat and
sleep?
Emily

Of course! Pandas are very playful. They enjoy rolling around, and they
can climb trees really well!
Gus

Amazing! I'd love to have a panda as a pet! But I think we'd need to turn
our garden into a bamboo forest...
Emily

... I'm not sure your parents would like that very much!

Exercise 4
The Lantern Festival

In the evening, Emily and Grandpa Gus find themselves at the heart of the Lantern
Festival.
What a beautiful night! What are all these people celebrating, Grandpa?

Emily

This is the Lantern Festival — it marks the end of the Chinese New Year
celebrations.
Gus

Oh, so that's why there are lanterns everywhere!

Emily

Yep. Each lantern is like a wish for good luck and happiness in the new
year.
Gus

Can we also light a lantern, Grandpa? Pleeeease!

Emily

That sounds like a great idea! Let's see if we can find where to buy one,
and we'll need some matches too.
Gus

Yay! This is going to be a fun night!

Emily
