The Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is one of India’s most famous
monuments. The name Taj Mahal means
“crown of palaces”. Located on a river near
the city of Agra, it is made from white marble
and dates from the mid-17th century. The
palace is famous for its beauty and also for
the incredible amount of time (over twenty
years) and work (22,000 workers) used in its
construction. It is easy to recognise the
building because it has got a large white
dome. It has a height of around thirty-five
metres and is surrounded by four smaller
domes. The full height of the Taj Mahal is
171 metres. It is surrounded by beautiful
gardens and a large reflecting pool. Millions
of visitors from all over the world come to
see the Taj Mahal every year.

Hi Julia!
We’re having a fantastic time on our tour of
London. Today we're going to see the Houses
of Parliament. It’s got a really old clock
tower with a huge bell inside. You can’t go
inside, but you can hear the bell chime the
hours from the street. The bell weighs 13,760
kilos! They call the tower Big Ben, but that’s
really the name of the bell.
After that we’re going to see Buckingham
Palace. It has got 775 rooms. We can visit
some of the rooms and the garden. The
Queen usually lives there, but not in the
summer. That’s when she goes on holiday to
Scotland.
Tomorrow we’re going to visit the Tower of
London. We’re taking a boat along the River
Thames. The Tower of London is one of the
oldest palaces in London and inside the
museum you can see the crown jewels. Some
people say there are ghosts in the Tower, too!
