CPL301S FISA QUESTION

1. Question: Pumps
Water is pumped along a smooth pipe from an open tank, via a centrifugal pump to a
heat exchanger as indicated in Figure 1.1. The length of the pipe on the suction side
is 25 m with a diameter of 65 mm. The length of the pipe of the discharge side is 125
m with a diameter of 65 mm. The difference in height between the tank and heat
exchanger is 10 m. The head developed for the heat exchanger is 1.5m. All the valves
are fully open. The length of 65 mm pipe between the centrifugal pump and check
valve is of negligible length. The piping system consists on one 90° elbow (standard)
on the suction side, while on the discharge side there is a 90° elbow (standard), as
well as a 45° elbow (long radius).

1.1 Use the data provided in table 1.1 to calculate the pump curve. Show at least one
sample calculation which includes your equations used. (8)

1.2 Use the data provided to calculate the system curve. Redraw table 1.2 in your
answer book and complete the empty blocks. Show at least one sample calculation for
each case (i.e frictional losses, shock losses and system head) which includes your
equations used. (15)

1.3 Sketch the graph of the above pumping system and indicate how you would know
the operating point.
(3)

1.4) Refer to the drawing of centrifugal pump and system operating curves (see figure
below). Which point represents pump operation at shutoff head? (2)

1.5) If a centrifugal pump is started with the discharge valve throttled versus fully open,
the possibility of pump runout will __________; and the possibility of pump cavitation
will __________. [decrease or increase] (3)
