c) Table below shows characteristics of a rotor dynamic pump when it is running at a speed of 1,500 rpm:
Q (m3/s) 0.00 0.05 0.10 0.15 0.20
H (m) 60 58 52 41 25
ɳ (%) 0 44 65 64 48
i) Generate pump characteristic curves (H, ɳ vs Q) of a geometrically similar pump of same size but
running at a speed of 1,000 rpm;
ii) Determine optimal operating point in the case of 1,000 rpm speed. (7 Marks)
d) A single acting reciprocating pump of diameter 0.2m and stroke length 0.5m lifts water 3.5m below and 7.5m
above the pump centerline. The suction and delivery lengths are 4.5m and 7.5m respectively. The suction and
delivery diameters are 75mm and 60mm respectively. An air vessel is fitted on the delivery side 0.5m from the
pump cylinder. Cavitation starts when the pressure drops to 7.2m below atmospheric. Determine the maximum
speed to avoid cavitation and the pressure head in the cylinder at the start of delivery stroke and sketch its
pressure diagram. Take William Hazen pipe friction factor as 120 and consider residual velocity head.
