ABOUT YESTERDAY…despite widespread torrential downpours across the Phoenix Valley
yesterday, the Mariners and Athletics played the Cactus League lid lifter Thursday at Hohokam
Stadium in Mesa…the game was cancelled due to rain after an inning-and-a-half of play…Marco
Gonzales tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the 1st inning…Shed Long doubled twice, while Dylan Moore
and Tito Polo each recorded one double.
2019 JAPAN OPENING SERIES…the Mariners will open the 2019 regular season in Tokyo, Japan
on March 20-21 against the Oakland Athletics…the two-game 2019 Japan Opening Series at the
Tokyo Dome will be “road” games for the Mariners…the Mariners will travel from Arizona to Tokyo on
Thursday, March 14…the trip will begin with two exhibition games vs. Nippon Professional Baseball
teams on Sunday, March 17 and Monday, March 18…the Mariners will begin the regular season on
March 20 at 6:35 pm in Tokyo (2:35 am in Seattle) and will fly back to Seattle following the game on
March 21 (6:35 pm in Japan/2:35 am in Seattle)…this will mark the 5th time that the Major League
Baseball regular season has opened with a two-game series in Japan (last: 2012, SEA vs. OAK).
VS. THE ATHLETICS…the Mariners and Athletics meet for the second of three Cactus League
games this spring (also: March 6)…yesterday’s Cactus League opener was cancelled in the middle
of the 2nd inning with the Mariners leading 5-0…Seattle was 2-1 vs. Oakland last spring…the
Mariners and Athletics will meet 19 times this season: 2 during the Japan Opening Series in Tokyo,
Japan (March 20-21), 9 times at T-Mobile Park and 8 times at the Oakland Coliseum.
THE 15 CLUB…Ichiro Suzuki and Félix Hernández are each entering their 15th Major League
Spring Training Camps with the Mariners…Ichiro has also appeared in 2 spring camps with the
Yankees (2013-14) and 3 spring camps with the Marlins (2015-2017), making this his 20th Major
League Spring Training…Ichiro made his first appearance at Seattle’s Spring Training as a special

OPENING NIGHT…after the Mariners open the regular season with a pair of games vs. the Oakland

NEW FACES…of the 67 players on the Mariners Spring Training roster, 35 were not with the Mariners
organization at the end of last season…among the 35 newcomers, 15 were acquired in trades this
past offseason…of the 32 returning players, 19 appeared in the Majors with the Mariners in 2018.
BUSY OFFSEASON…from the end of the 2018 regular season through the first day of Seattle’s
Major League Spring Training (Feb. 11), the Mariners completed nine trades, signed seven Major
League free agents and claimed one player in the Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft…of the
nine trades involving the 40-man roster, the Mariners acquired 17 players and completed deals with
eight different clubs.
ON THE AIR…today’s telecast on ROOT SPORTS will feature in-game interviews with Mariners
players and coaches; manager Scott Servais, infielder Shed Long, infielder J.P. Crawford and
right-hander Chasen Bradford are scheduled to appear on the telecast…Dave Sims and Mike

(Baseball America)…split the season with High-A St. Lucie and Double-A
Binghamton, going 8-8, 3.59 (54 ER, 135.1 IP) with 156 SO and 52 BB in
24 starts…promoted to Binghamton on June 10.
• The Trade - Acquired in trade with New York-NL along with Jay Bruce
(of), Anthony Swarzak (rhp), Gerson Bautista (rhp) and Jarred Kelenic (cf)
in exchange for Robinson Canó (inf), Edwin Díaz (rhp) and cash consider-
