“This book is intended primarily for use by practising engineers who are in the business of
design of foundations and for students preparing for engineering practices. I is intended to
Serve as a text for the course on the Design of Substructures or Foundation Design
feualy taught atthe postgraduate level. Since the book deals largely with design aspects
Complicated and involved theoretical treatment is omitted. The background theories are
however generally presented inthe form of concise formulae and chars.
Since 1964 the author has been actively engaged in the teaching of Foundation
Engineering at both graduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Roorkee (now
renamed as IIT Roorkee). The course on Design of Substructures has been offered by the
thor to postgraduate student for over twenty years. The author has also over thirty years
fxperience in the practice of the art of foundation engineering during which he had the
‘pportunity to provide consultancy in sol exploration, analysis and design of foundations for
Strctues like mutistoreyed buildings, thermal plants, cement factories, oil storage tanks,
towers, chimneys ete. During this exercise, the author felt the need for a text coven
comprehensively the basic aspects of geotechnical engineering, analysis and structural design
fof foundations and retaining structures. An attempt has been made to fill this gap. The
Spproach has been to deal with a topic in totality, starting ftom the inital stage of soil
exploration and testing and ending with analysis and design, The methodology of design has
been demonstrated through many ilustraive examples. Al the formulae, charts and examples
aro given in SI unis
‘Some of the material included in this book has been drawn fom the works of oer
authors. tngpite of sincere efforts, some contributions may not have been acknowledged
‘The author apologises for such omissions, Thanks are due to all the authors and publishers
for their kind permission to reproduce tables, Sigues and equations
“The author wishes to express his appreciation to Km, Seema Verma, Me. Dinesh Sain
and Si SS. Gupia for the typing and drawing work. Thanks are also due to the many
colleagues, friends and students of the authot who assisted in the writing ofthis book

received from his family members, especially his daughter Varika Hemant, who encouraged
him right through the various stages of study and writing.
This book is dedicated to the author's parents asa token of his gratitude, unbounded
