For the Dystopian Trailer, we were required to choose a contemporary social issue and make a statement about it
Groups would exaggerate the problem, designing a future with oppressive societal control andthe illusion of @ perfect
society are maintained through government control, The Dystopian Films are exaggerated worst case scenarios, making
criticism about the issue that we chose. From there, we created a movie premise, creating characters and writing a script
‘that would hook the audience. I took over a month to complete, with the writing, shooting and editing process. This was
difficult project because our group decided to take a different approach, We chose the issue of global warming, where
the smog has completely covered the Earth and blocked out all lght from the sun. People are forced to live inthe dark
‘With the small amount of government rations that they receive, We created a cult that offered a second chance and gave
their members additional resources, weaving the initiation video forthe cult into the video trailer. Although some of our
classmates were confused about the use of archival media footage forthe initiation video, our group worked hard to edit
‘our film and were proud of the final product. t looked creepy and interesting, which was exactly what we were going for.
‘The Dystopian Trailer was a project that incorporated many different elements: we wrote a creative and original script

the audience through our film, describing the importance of the problem and the possible future ifthe issue isn’t
addressed, the assignment fits under Media and Communications.

incorporate various sound effects, video effects and music, adding tothe suspense ofthe film and enticing the reader,
which isthe point of any video trailer. I believe that our understanding of the topic is influenced by the way it was
‘communicated, asthe point ofthe Dystopian project is to exaggerate and present the worst-case scenario tothe audience.
When we communicate through film, we can effectively present this worst case scenario by using various video
techniques to dramatize and heighten the creepiness ofthe video. Inthe case of my group, I believe that using film was
especially beneficial. Incorporating the initiation film forthe cult was an interesting idea, as it pus the audience in the
position ofthe main character. | don’t think that the initiation video would have worked in any other medium, a it was a
scattered collection of random movie and video clips from the twentieth century. Although I learned many skills from
this project, the most important was the difference between a short film and a trailer. It was also.a chance to explore our
