A NEWLY DISCOVERED I5th-CENTURY

MANUSCRIPT OF THE ENGLISH
CHAPEL ROYAL- PART II

By MANFRED F. BUKOFZER

THE newly found English manuscript Egerton 3307

the previous issue by Mr. Schofield of the Manus
of the British Museum, gives us a most welcome ad
knowledge of 15th-century English music. The a
source of this magnitude and relative completene
logical event of the first order. The fact that the manu
only a few compositions previously known from oth
cates only too clearly how little we know of the total re
period. In order to present as much as possible of
available space has been reserved in this article to th
of two significant compositions, the Mass fragmen
the St. Luke Passion (f. 20-24b), the first polyphoni
Passion known to us. The transcriptions were made p
the courtesy of Mr. Schofield, who obligingly sent
from England. The stylistic discussion of the works her
of the musical contents of the manuscript in gener
position in the development of the English school m
to a later occasion.
In the transcription of the original --- indicates a ligature,
red notation is represented by r- -- , and editorial additions are
marked by [ ]. Accidentals of the original score are given in the
staff; those that have to be supplied by the singers are written above
the note, and are valid only for the measure in which they appear.
Questionable and optional accidentals are enclosed in ( ). The
vertical strokes at the top of the brace represent breathing marks
which look in the manuscript like rests, but do not have a mensural
significance.
The first part of the Mass is incomplete. From the remaining
segment, it appears that the missing portion of the Kyrie eleison
must have consisted of two exclamations, of which the first is en-
tirely lacking and only part of the second remains. This second
exclamation can, however, be completed by mm. 14 and 15, which
lead into the same harmony. The Mass vacillates between a three-

sometimes above and sometimes below the bass. The color has no
mensural meaning, but merely serves to keep the voices apart. At
some places, however, both voices are written in red notes, which
makes the differentiation difficult, particularly because the red no
tation is used here in the main voice with mensural significance an
in the other without it.
In measure 48 of the Sanctus the d of the middle voice is in the
manuscript a breve with a hold; measure 49 is adjusted according
to the identical cadence in measure 18. The Benedictus erroneously
prescribes in measure 22 a faintly visible and possibly erased 4 be-
fore the b of the lowest voice. In section V, measure 3 of the Passion
the sharp is inserted by mistake before a rather than before g, and
the c (-sharp) of the middle voice in the following measure is a longa
in the manuscript. The spelling of the words and their disposition
under the music follow the original with the exception of mono-
syllabic words which the scribe divides in melismatic sections
(e - - - st), but which are given here according to modern usage
(est----).
