CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.5 Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action. Objective The student will be able to identify the emotional impact of unfair situations through a group discussion and a group activity with 90% accuracy. Procedure 1. Introduce: Present the book The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. Then ask, “Has anyone been treated differently for looking a certain way? Have anyone been treated unfairly?” Have a brief discussion about unfairness. Go over the title and ask, “What is a Sneetch? What can the cover tell us about a Sneetch?”
2. Read: Teacher read out loud to the entire class.
3. Discuss: Students will reflect and individually answer five
questions about the book The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. Then they will break off into partners and discuss their answers. They will compare their answers and share with the class what they learned about their partner.
Question 1. What was the difference between one Sneetch and
the other kind of Sneetch? Question 2. Why did the star-belly Sneetches think they were better? Question 3. How did the plain-belly Sneetch feel about being left out? Question 4. Why did the Sneetch remove their stars? Question 5. What lesson do you think the Sneetches learned? 4. Activities: 1. Students will individually decorate a star. They may use crayons, markers, stickers, and tape. Then they will be divided up into two groups, group one will have stars taped on their chest and group two will not. Group one will receive special treatment and group two will not. After sometime group two will wear the stars and receive special treatments. (Hands-on)
2. Student will individually write about how it felt to have the
star on in class and then write about how they felt about not having the star on. They will also write about how what they learned and how they can make others not feel left out. Then share with the class out loud. Evaluation: The teacher will review student’s response and see if they learned something new.
