Assessment task 1: Group presentation (30% of total mark)

You will work in groups of 3-4 students on an issue in approaches and concepts in English
language teaching and learning. The group will conduct a piece of research into the field of
interest to gather information from acknowledged sources, synthesize the information and
state your group’s point of view toward the issue (discuss to draw out your group’s point of
view), after that report the results orally to the class with visual aids and other resources (if
necessary), for 25-40 mins (8-10 minutes/student).
(Wordload: equivalent to 1500 words)

A good presentation will:

 address all elements of the task set
 show comprehension of source texts and understanding of the issue;
 show evidence of your viewpoint and critical thinking;
 present the information gained from the research clearly and logically and in an
appropriate manner and
 include all members of the group in the process and presentation.

Assessment task 2: Report (30% of total mark)

You will observe an English class (perhaps video file) for one period (45 minutes) to write a
report of about 1500 words on the class observation which must include what happened in
the English class lesson; analyze the strong and weak points of the lesson on the basis of
relevant theoretical understanding as well as summarize what you could learn from the
lesson to support your future practice. The language of the report is expected to be at C1
level (CEFR).

A good report will:
 address all elements of the task set;
 present the information gained from the observation clearly and in an appropriate
manner;
 show thorough understanding of relevant theoretical issues by referring directly to
the theory and citing relevant sources which include up-to-date research and
 showing evidence of your viewpoint and critical thinking.

Assessment task 3: Written assignment (40% of total mark)

You will make a plan for a 45-minute lesson to teach a certain language element or a
language skill. You will also provide a rationale (about 500 words) for the lesson plan
including relevant theoretical points, the learners, the objectives of the lesson and each
stage and activity; and describe your learning experience in the whole process of lesson
planning in a reflection (about 500 words). The language of this assignment is expected to
be at C1 level (CEFR).

Note that you may microteach the activities in groups for peer observation and for
comments from peers and teacher. You will have an opportunity to try the activities within a
group (optional) for their observation and comments. After the trial teaching, you should
improve the activities in accordance with the experience gained and your peers’ comments
for a revised lesson plan in which you mention what changes you have made and what
lesson you have learned from your peers. All of this is for final submission.

A good piece of work will:

 address all elements of the task set;
 show thorough understanding of relevant theoretical issues, the ability to draw
connection between these and the design and appropriate application;
 show originality and appropriateness in the use of classroom activities and materials;
 show logical sequence of stages in the lesson and steps in the activity and
 have a clear and logical presentation with appropriate and accurate use of language.
