Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Evaluate the roles and approaches to language assessment; the grading, feedback and reporting
in language classroom and assessment issues in ESL Primary classroom. (C5, PLO2, KKG3)
2. Construct various test items and rubrics based on Table of Specification for specific language
skills, grammar and vocabulary for the primary ESL classroom. (C6, A4, PLO2, PLO8, KKG8,
KEP10)
3. Present assessment issues in the Primary Language Classroom contexts. (A3, PLO4, KIK2)

This coursework is for evaluating all the learning outcomes above.

Coursework Objectives:

Students will be able to:

1. explain the role and approaches of language assessment, the alternative forms of
assessment, grading, feedback and reporting in the primary ESL classroom in a 60-minute
written quiz.
2. design an assessment kit which includes test items and rubrics (an equivalent of 1000
words) for assessment in the primary ESL classroom.
3. conduct a thirty-minute oral presentation on issues and concerns in language assessment in
Malaysian primary schools.
COURSEWORK TASKS (100%)

Assessment can, and should, be an integral part of what teachers do. When used
appropriately, it helps the students to understand what they can and can’t do, and by
doing this, helps them move forward and see clearly what they need to do next.
(Harmer, 2015: p.408)

Task 1: Written Quiz – 30% (Individual)

 Complete a 60-minute written quiz that will test understanding on the following topics:
o Topic 1: The role of assessment in the language classroom
o Topic 2: Alternative language assessment
o Topic 3: Approaches to language testing
o Topic 7: Grading, feedback and reporting
o Topic 8: Assessment issues in the Malaysia Primary ESL Classrooms

Task 2: Assessment Kit: Test Items and Rubrics – 50% (Individual)


 Prepare an assessment kit to obtain a clear and objective representation of your students’ ability
in the English language. Your kit should assess your pupils’ language skills and knowledge as
stipulated in the DSKP.
 Using your knowledge on assessment to promote learning, design:
o one test to assess grammar and/or vocabulary.
o one test to assess receptive skills / productive skills.
o one alternative assessment to assess ‘Language Arts’.
 Your assessment kit should also include:
o The context of the assessment (target students, unit(s) of study, learning standards, etc).
o A clear description with table of specifications (where applicable) and instructions (for
assessment-users and takers) for each assessment above. Include HOTs element in
your assessment package.
o The scoring method/ rubrics/assessment criteria.
o Justifications for the assessment kit you have designed above.
o Substantiate with relevant readings.
This task is equivalent to 1000 words.

Task 3: Oral Presentation - 20% (Individual)

 Discuss and identify possible issues and concerns related to assessment in Malaysian ESL
primary schools.
 Relate the issues and concerns identified to the current Malaysian Standard Curriculum and
school-based assessment procedures.
 Support the issues and concerns with relevant readings.
 Conduct an oral presentation of the issues and concerns in 30 minutes.
 Submit your video recording and supporting documents to Google Classroom.

A good assignment should show:


1. good understanding of the task;
2. originality of idea and presentation;
3. appropriate language use.

2. The format of Task 2 is as follows:


i. Font Arial size 11.
ii. Sources of information using the latest APA format.
iii. Include a reference list (if applicable).

3. Plagiarism is an abuse of copyright and is strongly prohibited. Plagiarism will be


dealt with in accordance with the Panduan dan Syarat Penganugerahan
Sijil/Diploma/Ijazah, Section 3.8, p. 17 – 20.

4. You should adhere to the deadline. Without an approved extension of time, late
submission will be downgraded to the next band.

5. The feedback form should be included together with the assignment.

Marking Criteria
The tasks will be marked against the marking criteria set. In the event where group work is
required, a penalty will be levied on the member(s) not contributing to the completion of the
task.
