Having fun with sand.

30 June 2018. Written by T Liz

Asalamo Alaikom and Kia Ora Thaakierah. Over the last few weeks I have noticed your
creativity has extended into the sandpit and you have spent a lot of time creating things
with sand. Today I watched you collecting spoonfuls of sand and tipping them back onto the
sand until you had a pile. You looked up and saw me watching you. You grinned when I asked
you what you were making. You laughed and squashed the pile of sand you were holding in
your hand then tipped it onto the pile you had already made. “It looks like you might be
building a mountain Thaakierah”. I suggested which made you smile again, the you stomped
on the pile with your foot until it was all flat. “That’s the end of that hill” I said as I smiled,
which made you laugh and jump up and down on the flat pile of sand.

What Learning Occurred?

Thaakierah’s learning pathway this term is expressing her creativity through a range of
media. She has become confident to explore the resources she wants to. Thaakierah’s is
developing a sense of playfulness which is the beginning of a sense of humour. She is using
her imagination to play with the sand. Thaakierah’s observation skills are increasing as she
used a trial and error method to find out what happened with the sand when she collected
spoonfuls, then dumped it in a pile, and stomped it flat. Thaakierah is discovering ways she
can express her ideas using her body language and facial expressions. Kia kaha ki tāu mahi
(keep up the good work) Thaakierah!

How can we extend this learning?

We will support Thaakierah’s creativity by talking with her about her play to provoke her
thinking.
