purposeful explorations

Hi Aizel, today I met up with you in the sitting in the sandpit, it seemed that you had
made your way there as soon as you came outside. You were currently the only one
in the sandpit and I asked if I could join you, you gave me a big smile. I opened up
the storage box and put out some different resources for you to use. You looked
around at the options and then quickly got to work. First you perfected a technique
for using the ice-cream scoop as it is slightly different to a normal spoon shape and it
requires you to swivel your wrist it in order to pick up the sand. Next you chose the
clear plastic container. I had especially put this out as it is see-through it is very
satisfying to see the sand inside the container from all angles. We chatted as you
tinkered away deciding what and how to use the resources you had chosen. You are
very chatty lately Aizel and you like to tell me big ‘stories’, when we chat together
you attempt many different sounds and intonations and I give you encouragement
through words amd body language to keep talking.
After some time I could see that you had decided what the plan was and you
purposefully picked up one scoop of sand and deposited into the clear container,
then another scoop for the muffin tray and another one which you poured back into
the sandpit from a height watching the grains fall. You repeated these actions many
times in differing orders but I could see that carefully transporting the sand was the
goal you set yourself for your explorations today. Your current intended learning
outcome is to demonstrate exploration by using your senses and physical abilities to
make sense of the world. Today I was able to support you with interesting resources
and you were able to show me your curiosity and goal setting which are great
dispositions for exploring and learning through play.
