Abstract
The educational system has learned that it does not succeed when educators use a “one-size-fits-
all” methods of teaching. Students are not cookie cutters and teachers must use different types of
strategies in order for students to achieve success. Teachers can use a variety of methods,
providing visuals, having students collaborate with one another, or using hands on activities in
Student Engagement
In order for a classroom to be effective, students must be engaged. This goes for all
types of classes. Without an engaging instructor, students cannot learn to their fullest potential.
The instructor must use engagement strategies in order to students to maintain focus throughout
the lesson. There are many types of engagement strategies; collaboration, multi-source learning:
visual, kinesthetic, hands on, etc. When teachers use engagement strategies, students excel in the
classroom.
According to CA TPE1
According to the California Teacher Expectations, teachers must ensure active and
equitable participation of all students. Teachers must use strategies to help students stay on
track. “If students are struggling and off task, candidates examine why and use strategies to re-
engage them” (CA TPE, 2013). Teachers engage students by asking stimulating questions and
challenging student ideas. One way that teachers can do this is to have a Socratic seminar,
utilize philosophical chairs or engage students in a debate. Providing these opportunities allows
students to be a part and gets their brains turning. Teachers can utilize sentence starters to help
students get started during the conversation when debating their classmates.
Collaboration.
One thing that teachers can use for all subjects in the classroom is collaboration.
Collaboration gets students to speak with one another using academic language. The students
can use elbow partners, the teacher can label off students “peanut butter/jelly, taco/bell,” etc.
Students can bump ideas off of their partners and use collaboration as a tool to further their
learning.
