Word Work
Prefixes and Suffixes
Prefix – a word part that comes before a base word and changes the meaning of the word. Common
prefixes (un -, re-, pre-, and ex-)

Suffix – a word part that comes after a base word. Common suffixes (-ful, -less, -ness, -ly)

Day 1
1) Word Work – Give students prefix and suffix word cards. Have them separate the words by drawing a
slash between the base and suffix/prefix. Read both parts aloud.
2) Comprehension – Preview the text. What is the title? What do you think this may be about? Why do
you think the author used that title? What is the genre? Noticings?
3) First read – read for familiarity. Discuss student observations and thoughts. Vocabulary: obesity,
guidelines, low-income areas

Day 2
1) Word Work – Prefix cards. Discuss what is the meaning of the base word? How does prefix change
the meaning of the base word? What must the prefix mean? Display other words with prefixes. What
is the meaning of the base word? What is the meaning of the base word and prefix together.
2) Second Read – Display learning target and focus question: “What is the author’s opinion about gym
class?” Students read the text again and determine the author’s opinion.

Day 3
1) Word Work - Suffix cards. Discuss what is the meaning of the base word? How does suffix change
the meaning of the base word? What must the suffix mean? Display other words with suffixes. What
is the meaning of the base word? What is the meaning of the base word and suffix together.
2) Third Read – Review what is the author’s opinion about P.E.? Give students the claim/ evidence
graphic organizer. Students locate the reasons the author gives to support their claim.
