RESEARCH PROBLEM AND RATIONALE:

In the 21st century technologies have become an enormous part of our
daily lives. As smartphones, laptops, desktops and tablets wholly
replaced the use of paper and pen. So many aspects of the ways we
communicate and handle information have been altered by
technological development. Also it is undeniable that technology had
a huge impact on education and most of the technology users were
students. Too often we neglect the responsibilities entailed to the
technology use. Digital Citizenship helps teachers, technology
leaders, parents most especially the students to understand what the
users should know to use technology appropriately and correctly.
Digital Citizenship plays a vital role within the user’s learning thus
improper use of digital medium may lead to negative effects.

OBJECTIVES:
The proposed study aims to provide an analysis on how digital
citizenship promotes students’ independent learning. The study also
has the specific objectives which are to:
(1) Identify the facets in which digital citizenship promotes
students’ independent learning;
(2) Determine the effects of digital citizenship in regards to
technology use; and
(3) Suggest practical ways to obtain digital citizenship.
EXPECTED OUTPUTS:
The expected output of this research is:
Present practical ways to obtain digital citizenship and its effects
towards students’ independent learning.
SIGNIFICANCE:
The importance of the conducted study is that it will help students
familiarize in the emergence digital citizenship in regards of a new
learning environment in digital age to achieve individual learning. By
practicing the digital citizenship they can achieve more than they can
know. This study is to provide opportunities to students to learn
responsibly through technology and ensure to use it appropriately as
to become a digital citizen. Moreover, the study would greatly
contribute in the variety of digital skills in the driving-seat of
technological-based innovations.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

Portable technological devices have become widespread at schools

and adapting to this new world order is the key to maintain the
attention to the use of technological advances, These changes have
influenced our daily lives and the concept of digital citizenship has
emerged. Digital citizenship is a term for practices done by
individuals to use technology appropriately. It is the norms,
responsible technology use which make a society a well-acquainted
with technology (Ribble, 2017). Digital citizenship has both positive
and negative sides. Therefore, it requires certain affective behaviors
comprising the nine elements of digital citizenship: a) digital access,
b) digital commerce, c) digital communication, d) digital literacy, e)
digital etiquette, f) digital law, g) digital rights and responsibilities, h)
digital health and wellness and i) digital security.
These nine elements aimed for individuals to gain cognitive, affective

and psychomotor behaviors. As people need to exert more effort to

obtain affective psychomotor behavior than cognitive ones, effective
learning methods is essential. Students should have a learning
environment where they can manage, choose, relate, apply and
reinforce their learning outcomes.

THEORETICAL/CONCEPTUAL/OPERATIONAL
FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY:

Theory of Multiple Intelligences and the Good Play Project was

founded by the theorist, Howard Gardner. Through this, he identifies
five ethical fault lines for children while online. These are identity,
credibility, privacy, ownership and participation. They have
collaborated with Common Media Sense to use Howard Gardner’s
Theory of digital ethics to create a literacy curriculum on digital
citizenship based on digital literacy, relationships and safety.

Digital Citizenship in Education

Dr. Mike Ribble has created the Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship
(Ribble, 2011). This Ribble’s nine elements of digital citizenship
which are digital forms of access, literacy, communication, etiquette,
security, rights and responsibilities, law, commerce and health and
wellness serve as the starting point for addressing the issue of digital
citizenship. It can also be categorized under the labels of Respect,
Educate and Protect. Ribble’s nine elements of digital citizenship
highlighted technology use associated with learning and academic
performance and student behavior.

Siemen’s Connectivism is a learning theory for the digital age and

extends learning by using a network of information resources. It is
applicable to highly networked societies in which connectivity and
communications are afforded by social media and stands as a useful
lens to digital citizenship.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY:

The scope area of the study is the University of Perpetual Help
Molino in Senior High School. The study will conduct an interview
in the selected respondents in the SHS of UPH-Molino STEM track.
Limitation is only on the research of efficiency of digital
citizenship in promotion to students’ independent learning.
The assumption is that digital citizenship enables students to
develop their learning.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

Digital Citizenship- defined as engaging in appropriate and

responsible behavior when using technology.
Digital Access- it is the full electronic participation in the society
Digital Communication- defined as electronic exchange of
information.

Digital Literacy- it is the process of teaching and learning about

technology and the use of technology.
Digital Etiquette- refers to the electronic standards of conduct

METHODOLOGY:
Research Site. The research study will be conducted inside the
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA – Molino Campus.
Respondents of the Study. There will be selected grade 11 STEM
students who use digital medium on their daily basis; it is to ensure
the satisfaction of the variables of this study.
Research Design and Data Collection. The research design that will
be applied in the study is case study since it deals with variables with
unifying factors. To achieve the in-depth responses of the
respondents, open-ended questions by the means of interview will be
done.
Data Analysis. The deductive approach will be used to analyze the
data based on the structure predetermined by the researchers. An
axial coding will be used in the gathered information and responses
of the respondents to explore the concepts and categories are related
to each other.
Research Instrument. Conducting an interview is the research
instrument which focuses on personal approach. There will be open-
ended questions to be asked by the interviewer.
